The main points are moving Emmerdale and Coronation Street to 7:30 and 8:00, allowing the regional slots and Tonight etc to follow the news, and making 8:30 a common start time across the week. The new soap commissions will go in on Friday making it soap night, whichever is the most lighthearted of the two would be the later, leading into comedy. Tuesday programmes still allow for the football to interrupt and I have included a consumer programme the likes of which we haven't seen on ITV in a long time. The South Bank Show is cut to 45 minutes but is followed by a programme that is related to its subject somehow. Finally, I've put in a few quiz shows, something else that's missing from the schedule (I've axed Millionaire!)

So it's goodbye to the 9pm dramas then - probably the most important part of ITV's schedule.

Well this is the official recovery plan :

Accelerate
Long running, sustainable dramas
Factual & Entertainment formats
Sketch comedy & sitcom

Grow
Long running formatted documentary series
Lifestyle programming
Gameshows and quizzes

Sustain primacy
Soaps
Daytime magazine / Talk

Reduce
One-off dramas

9pm Strategy
More 60 minute drama at 9pm
Fewer repeats
More football
More comedy

and now of course News at Ten.

The actual strategy seems to be what ITV needs - only thing I think most of us would argue with is the soaps, but to be honest until they strengthen the schedule across the board they probably can't afford to mess too much with the soaps.

Talking of which - random idea, but with the soaps rather than cutting the number of episodes how about taking them off air for short periods.

We've often talked about things like taking them off at Christmas and for events like the World Cup - but I'm thinking more about taking them off for short period of 1-2 weeks for event programming - therefore limiting the risk of losing the audiences when they're off air.

Britain's Got Talent would be the best example, stripped across a week or two at 7pm - while a similar strategy could be employed for The X Factor audition stage, or even I'm a Celebrity could move to that slot.

Random idea, which has the advantage of keeping the 9pm slot free for the drama - but of course it;s a disadvantage too as I'm sure it saves more money to take the drama off air than it is the soap.

But on that line anyway, I do think on ITV anyway programming like Britain's Got Talent and even I'm a Celebrity would be more suited to 8pm as part of a more balance schedule.

P.S. Scheduling reality and ITV1 have a new quiz format sometime next year - Duel, which is some head to head game of nerves. It's made by Gallowgate productions - so expect Ant and Dec to be hosting - but it be good if it went out on a weeknight rather than Saturday nights.

Though talking of Saturdays, Ant and Dec have piloted a new version of You Bet in the USA - so could that make a UK return? And talking of returns, Gladiators are back in Australia next year too.

No, they would just start at 8:30 instead, enabling them to be 90 minutes before News at Ten, and there wouldn't be so many on weeknights.

90 minute dramas are awkward though - all commissions made since Grade are 60 minutes strictly and this was reported early into his tenure; it's only emerging now that this was due to the News at Ten's reinstation when the dramas are due to air (2008).
GO
gottago
I did think up my own crazy little schedule before News at Ten was announced as returning. It's obsolete now since they announced it but I might as well get it out of my brain!

Basic weekday structure
1900 Monday & Friday: Tonight/Tues-Thu: Regional Programming
1930 Coronation St
2000 Emmerdale
2030 60 minute drama
2130 60 minute drama
2230 News at 10:30
2300 Perhaps some sort of a late night chat show.

The idea was that the soaps would (hopefully) provide a big lead in to the first drama at 8:30. Also, starting the dramas at 30 minutes past was to stop people flicking over after the first programme (on the assumption that programmes on other channels had started on the hour) as they would have already missed half of the other programme. That said, there are some half hour programmes during the 8pm hour on other channels so it still could have lost a sizeable audience.

On Tuesdays which is often ITV1's low ratings day (IIRC), the dramas could be replaced by reality shows like Britain's Got Talent/Dancing on Ice or something new that hasn't been established as a Saturday night/ every weeknight show.

Sunday
1900 The Bill?
2000 Well established Sunday night dramas like Heatbeat that consistantly bring in ratings.
2100 Drama aimed at older demographic; people who will stick around for The South Bank Show later
2200 Weekend News
2230 The South Bank Show
2330 Go all BBC4 and show a French drama! Very Happy

I'm not sure about moving The Bill here, it could well be the thing that kills it! Perhaps leave The Bill in an 8:30 slot on a Thursday. As for the French drama (!) perhaps that would be a little too un-ITV1. Perhaps that slot be left for regional programming.

Saturdays would be as they are now but at fixed times and on the hour. And I'd scrap WWTBAM because I just hate WWTBAM!

A few other things: all dramas would be 60 minutes long, A. because they're easier to schedule and B. they're probably easier to sell abroad as less would need to be edited out if they were to be squeezed into a 60 minute slot. Also, the 8:30, 9:30 structure would be continued onto ITV2,3&4 so that if they are going to turn over, there's a bigger chance of the audience going to an ITV channel.

Oh well, that's wasted 10 minutes of my eventless day. There isn't even any point in commenting on it, it can't happen now the news is moving back. I desperately need to get out more!

So do we all.

Interesting ideas but I doubt the 8.30pm idea would work in the long-run - and I'm sure Corrie fans would be slighted at Emmerdale getting a later slot, would make out E'dale is more important. Not to mention the clashes with EastEnders, Holby City etc on BBC One Very Happy

The 9pm watershed means 8.30pm dramas are non-starters really.

Holby City on BBC1 seems to be increasingly disregarding the watershed. A few weeks ago there was that infamous episode which tried to outdo Bad Girls for the amount of swearing therein - and while since it hasn't quite been that bad, they've often pushed the boundaries in the banter between characters.

Not that swearing bothers me one iota - even Children's Ward once had a consultant saying to a nurse "And you're Florence bloody Nightingale?" but it surprises me that in these supposedly more tolerant times we're actually more prudish about bad language to the point where broadcasters are directed to forewarn us before a programme even starts.

Well here we go, my "fantasy schedule".
I haven't done one for the weekend, but I would cut the Sunday episode of Emmerdale, and replace it with a new Factual show.

On Monday night from 10.45, STV would show Scotsport, with ITV Wales showing their regional programmes.

Corrie Monday-Friday wouldnt work IMO. Corrie needs to lose at least 1 episode a week and not be shown 5 nights a week Mon-Fri.

Let's see your schedule?

I dont have one. No point as I doubt anything will change regarding the soaps having less episodes.
