I've seen a quote from the lady, somewhere, where she says she had "exciting" plans for "new characters and storylines" for the series, which rather inclines me to wonder whether five decided to pull it before her hand on the tiller made it go the way of EastEnders?
Well it's a shame in that so many jobs have been lost and no-one likes to see an institution fail, and being the one constant in the five schedule for 8 years does kinda make it an institution, even if only over 2-3% of us know it exists!
Hopefully now it'll bow out in style, maybe the characters could die on board a boat again? Either way I expect the exterior set to remain perfectly intact, no doubt appearing in The Bill and so on over the next few years.
Although I've never watched Family Affairs before I think that it's a shame thats it's going because it was one of the better soaps and launched actors into a very busy career.
I do think thats this is time for a re-vamp of the 6pm schedule which is looing very tired now. I'd like to see an american soap come to five again like The Bold and the Beautiful or Sunset Beach moved back to a prime slot. Something like this:
6:00: Sunset Beach/Bold and the Beautiful
6:45: Home and Away
7:15: Five News
7:30: (normal scheduling)
This way, having a longer soap until 6:45 will hopefully keep viewers tuned to five instead of Holyoaks.
