Ever since the addition of specially-written music to idents, over the years certain sounds and samples within the tracks become associated with particular pres. It's easy to assume all the elements are unique to the ident (or sting) alone. So, it's intriguing to suddenly hear elements of them crop up at other places, usually in other television music.
For example:
Hearing the then titles to BBC's Holiday programme in 2000...
...And my wondering what the flute trill from the BBC 2 Balloon was doing in there.
A 2008 factual programme called Unsung Heroes had text wipes with a whooshing sound effect - flashback to 90s DEF II...
Or that Mitchell and Webb sketch - a clock chimes in the background which sounds very... English?
And various others, too. Quite sure they are mainly from sample library discs (and I've dealt with a few that have along this sort of ground when writing music in more recent years), to be used without having to worry about clearance. But with any strong ident association, it's still odd hearing them 'out of context', in a way. I've no idea where the above ones come from, but it would be interesting to know.
Now -- I did think: despite the BBC 1 Christmas affair, the BBC has had specially-composed music for its *regular* idents to this day. But yesterday evening, I discovered something.
Watching an old recording of Channel 4 from 1997, I'd stopped on an ad for a Toyota Corolla. Yet when I played it, I thought I had mixed up the input select with a set-top box on BBC 2 - it was playing out the Sunroof ident music. Then I realised.
Here's the video capture - quite honestly, I couldn't believe what I was hearing!

So who exactly knew about this?
I admit, I'm a bit stunned at the idea of a decade-old track already used for an unconnected brand being, erm, commissioned (dredged up?) and on-air, even now. I'm assuming the BBC were fully aware of what they were getting. But without knowing the full picture, it's an odd one. As 'hearing ident music where you least expect it' goes, I reckon this will take some beating...
If anyone else has heard, or recalls, familiar sample sources from pres that have been used in other pieces (perhaps aside from public releases), can identify any sample sources, or shed some light on this curious Sunroof / Toyota ad re-use, I'd really like to hear it.
