Whilst I agree that both have a place on TV, Pop Idol is literally that- it will produce pop singers who are given pop songs to sing. Their careers will be short-lived and will almost exclusively be male (pop singles are only bought by 12 year old girls). It will not produce a rock, indie, RnB etc. singer (male or female) and it will not produce singer-songwriters (or even just songwriters), but Fame Academy will.

Exactly my point. FA's students are at least given a fighting chance of some longevity with their songwriting/composing abilities developed by the teachers.....

also adding to hopefully there being a third series is that Heat magazine has at one point (either this week or last week) said that PI has 2million less viewers for the time that the 2shows overlap. when FA finished its ratings increase to that 6m figure.

fingers crossed for Alex!

So the FA/PI ratings aren't that clear cut then..... hmm...... that's very interesting....

Well last Saturday the main Pop Idol show averaged 6.6m viewers over the hour, peaking at 8.7m.

I've seen a bit of the final tonight, and I think it's all a pile of crap really. Richard Park will worm his way up Alex's backside no matter how badly she sings. I'm afraid that although I was no fan of Will or Gareth, the Pop Idol contestants are so much better in the sense that they have the turn-the-radio-up factor that these students never will, I'm afraid.

I think the fact that the forum's only two members who religously watch, both watch it on principle, shows you how much generally better Pop Idol is.

I'm really enjoying the final tonight - I thought Carolynne was definitely going to be the first to go. Alistair's first performance wasn't the best, but his second was a big imrpovement on the first time he performed it. Alex is the sure winner though - fantastic!

And sky|whateveryournameis, if you're going to talk about Pop Idol, would you mind going talking about it in its dedicated thread? If you can't accept that some people like Fame Academy over Pop Idol that's your problem.

It's Music.

Maybe you would like to tell me how I am supposed to compare and contrast the two programmes in discussions if I can't mention the other show in the opposite thread?

When I'm talking about Pop Idol alone, it has been done in the designated thread.

What total utter rubbish. If Pop Idol's so good, why isn't it getting the backing of one of Britain's greatest ever singer/songwriter/musicians in the form of Sir Paul McCartney who officially endorsed the Fame Academy bursary? Hymagumba and I might be the most regular viewers, but what we say speaks for a lot of other people viewing this site as guests.

I am a musician, I play the flute (to ABRSM Grade 7 Distinction standard, the highest grade being 8 ), clarinet, piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums and am regarded by my choir as one of their five finest singers. Currently auditioning for my local Operatic Society, I passed GCSE music at Grade A*, and I know that Pop Idol just simply isn't good enough for a girl of my talent. Fame Academy is.

In NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM is Fame Academy crap. It demonstrated baseness of intellect to blithely pass it off as such. Maybe your level of musical appreciation is somewhat limited and underdeveloped, whereas other peoples' goes the distance and then some.

sky music, this is the last night of FA, and no doubt this thread will be made unsticky and sealed for all eternity five minutes after the show, give it a rest.

I have GCSE, AS and A level music. I also have an ACAM Diploma on the Electronic Organ. Don't tell me I don't know a thing about music because it's not true! That bursuary is only there as the BBC should really put a "public service" element to it.

Sentiment echoed again - Alex would obliterate any Pop Idol competition!!

Compare and contrast, eh? Rather than "completely slate"?
