Very good. Your point is well taken. At page 35 though, and in the final week of this series, let us stick to the point at hand.

Go Alex.

That is all.

But isn't the point at hand to have a good ol' fashioned debate about the programme, and its rivals? I'm sure there are plenty of other forums who give a damn about who wins.

Any exchange of alternative views between myself and Square Eyes is meant in my case to be witty banter-swapping. I know I'll never win him over to the BBC, I think he knows I won't be won over to ITV so it's pretty light-hearted stuff with a bit of slightly 'heavier' needling if either one of us gets too tribalistic/pompous/sycophantic and I hope he sees it that way too. We need each other as a leveller, I think....

No offence meant on my part anyway....

Oh yes, that's it absolutely. Apart from the fact that I do actually watch some BBC output. Anyway, Gavin you are correct, you are the voice of reason in this here thread.

None I would bother visiting, but I'm sure you are right.

The bit I objected to was less that people have a favourite, but that there was a suggestion that the talent/contestants are less or more worthy simply because of the way the show is packaged, or that they would go on to have better careers.

This Fame Academy Final will do better than thirty something on the Channel 4 100 TV Treats 2003 this time round. Last year the final from the gigantic Sheperton Studios was a far from fantastic No. 37 out of the 100 shows selected. Pop Idol & The Osbournes first series were in the Top 5. This isn't important AT ALL but it is always nice to see shows you never miss getting ranked in the Top 10 TV of the year.
Fame Academy is never in the running for real TV Awards so this kind of Telly highlights show is the only way this show will get itself any mention.

Yes, one can forget how vital 100 TV Treats is to the wellbeing of our society, scheduled at 10pm on New Years Eve when everyone else is out on the razz.

*the very thought of being out on the razz in Newport*

I like how, on the one episode I've seen of Pop Idol, Carrie and whatsisname Grant managed to get an advert on HTV for their dvd during two commercial breaks. Didn't Fame Academy pinch them from the last Pop Idol? I'm sure they were on it.

And I'm also sure FA is cutting into valuable Neighbours time in the afternoons, it's made them chop it down I'm *certain*.

Whilst I agree that both have a place on TV, Pop Idol is literally that- it will produce pop singers who are given pop songs to sing. Their careers will be short-lived and will almost exclusively be male (pop singles are only bought by 12 year old girls). It will not produce a rock, indie, RnB etc. singer (male or female) and it will not produce singer-songwriters (or even just songwriters), but Fame Academy will.

I believe the ratings (5.8million last week vrs 6.2million for Pop Idol) justify a third series, especially when Alex's shining career will always be tagged with "that girl from Fame Academy", resulting in a whole new audience for a new series.
