I've just been watching
Penguins - Spy in the Huddle
which includes this shot with a digitally duplicated penguin (the two on the left):
This was a good few years after the polar bear scandal that gripped the nation back in 2011. Such innocent times...
Anyway, it got me thinking about other times TV has deceived us. There were the fixed 50s gameshows on American TV, but one bit of gameshow fakery I remember was less scandalous but a bit bizarre.
It was a Lily Savage episode of Blankety Blank . The first half proceeded as usual, but when the set span round for the second game, the same man appeared to be in one of the seats with a different name and a different jumper. There were laughs and played-up confusion from Lily. They never actually said they were twins, but that was obviously what you were supposed to think.
It gets even weirder because at the end of the episode, when all the contestant come back to mill around, they had what appeared to be a stand-in for the "twin" keeping his back to the camera.
Then there was The Crystal Maze , where they would occasionally intervene when a game went really terribly.
I also still have my suspicions that The Great Reality TV Swindle was a hoax about a hoax. At least of the contestants was a jobbing actor (not that that proves anything).
More conventionally, it was always fun to watch Bergerac if you live in Jersey just to spot him driving round a corner and teleport 9 miles, or running from one side of the island to another in 10 seconds.
When else has TV lied to us, either maliciously or randomly?
