They've launched a website for Xtraview.
Xtraview website
It's the 'best' of TopUpTV for £1 a day. No viewing card or phone connection required.
Seems like a wasted opportunity for a new channel!?!

I agree. Surely they could have found a "proper" channel from 6.00am-11.00pm to broadcast onto the TopupTv stream rather than waste it with a glorified, and confusing ad for the Top Up platform. Paramount would have been a good catch!

DO NOT SWITCH OFF your receiver or put it into standby after purchase otherwise you may lose access to XTRAVIEW and will have to pay again.
That's a bit crap isn't it?

From reading some stuff in other places... it works like this...
There is one video stream (carrying 2 hour chunks of various channels) with an MHEG overlay. The application gives you a randomly generated code number. You phone a number which costs you £1 and then enter that code. That code is decrypted into another number, which you then enter into the MHEG application. This will effectively remove the MHEG layer allowing you to view the video.
Clearly then if you turn off the box it will generate a new code number the next time you tune to that channel, but will it not also generate a new number if you change channel?!
It's ingenious, I'll give them that, but I don't think it's something that will work - apart from anything else I suspect the code could be quite easily cracked - though why you'd bother cracking it I don't know as the offerings (2 hour chunks of the Top-Up TV Channels) aren't worth the hassle.

TopUpTV is all very reminiscent of the poor channel line-up of ONdigital.
I'm surprised it has lasted this long. It's a very clever way of getting people to preview it and be recompensed for it, but considering the average DTT slot costs £3m (apparently), that's an awful lot of phone calls.

So this is also how the Red Hot channel (No. 61 on Freeview) works then? It's a bit weird, but if you're going to pay £5.99 for one night's soft porn there must be something wrong with you. Plus the 10 minute preview never really inspired me to sign up. It's not very glamourous looking (especially the 'older' ladies. Eww.)
It's still quite amusing flicking through the channels because you can still hear the sound on this Red Hot thing, and it's all panting and groaning. I guess you could turn it up loud every night to p**s off the neighbours.
Mind you.. if the code was really easy to crack, then I doubt I'd say no to some free viewing.
