The country didn't re-vote - the spokeslady delivering the votes got them wrong. Because the hosts and the EBU team already know the votes electronically they were able to correct her and ask her to re-announce the one she got wrong.

Why did one country have to re-vote last night? I missed what happened because Wogan was doing a voice-over.

National pride that your song was the best that entered - plus the first contest ran only 10 or 11 years after the end of the Second World War which had split Europe apart. A joint competition of song was seen as a way of bringing Europe together - plus it was a way of using the very new Eurovision links between countries!
What is the prize for the winning performance/country?
There is usually some hideous trophy - and the honour of hosting the next contest.
Apparently it is the world largest non-sporting event - so there is a lot of prestige in hosting it - and it can raise the profile of your country on a European stage.

A lot of people not happy with BBC HD and the sound, looks like it was a major blunder by Red Bee, it sounds like no one actually checked the sound coming down from the HD feed, pretty disgraceful as is the contest, its about time the BBC saved the license money from this farce.
For the first 30 mins or so the AC3 encoder appeared to be forced into 1.0 centre channel only - which suggests an encoder metadata fowl-up. (AIUI the encoder is always fed with 6 channels of audio - and the metadata is used to flag which mode to encode in, i.e. which audio streams contain audio rather than silence)
It would not be practical to listen to off-air audio in the presentation area as it would be a good couple of seconds later than the incoming audio - and you'd go mad trying to work out what was what.
HOWEVER - an off-air monitor showing the status of an AC3 decoder would be a sensible thing to have. The BBC use only a few configurations - 2.0, 5.1 and poss 4.0 - anything else should set off alarms.

No way - Scooch was a million times worse and actually did deserve to finish where it did. Daz Sampson and Javine weren't much better.
Nooo Terry is Eurovision, if he goes I go.
I fear that if Terry were to go his replacement would be the ubiquitous Graham Norton - judging from his performance on the Eurovision Dance Contest, that would be an extremely bad thing.

I think a more likely replacement is Paddy O Connell who currently commentates on the Semis over on BBC Three.

Does the winner also get straight though to the final aswell?
TT
Of course. The winner of 2007 (Serbia) was the host for 2008. Likewise this year's winner (Russia) should be the host next year.

By the way - I see quite a few people didn't "get" the Swedish spokesperson.
He was Bjorn Gustafsson (apologies if that's not the right spelling), who is a comedian who did interval act stuff during their Melodifestivalen selection show. His faltering, nervous delivery, and giving points to Sweden was part of his schtick... But most of Europe didn't seem to know that and just assumed he was drunk, rubbish or both...

Ken Bruce described him as a comedian of the unfunny kind and said he was another one who wont be doing it next year.
