Think we should all be keeping an eye on Serbia at the moment... If the political situations gets much worse then it is possible that either :

Countries will withdraw in protest
The situations will be deemed to unsafe for the contest to take place in Belgrade

(That said - the contest took place under very tight security in recent years in Istanbul and Jerusalem)

I wonder if we could see the event moved to some were at last mintute maybe they'd make do with TVC. It's the only way we see it for a long time!

These days I'd expect SVT to be the first choice as host broadcasters if the event had to switch locations - as the Swedes effectively produce the show each year most years anyway, and they have the closest experience match with their high quality Melodifestivalen shows (which are close to Eurovision in scale and happen over 6 weekends)... The EBU Eurovision Exec Producer, Svante Stockselius, used to work for SVT I believe as well...

However the requirement for lots of accommodation and a large venue to be available (they wouldn't do it in a TV studio these days - it has to be bigger than that) would probably dictate where it was produced.

On the other hand - the BBC do still have an amazing ability (just about) to set things up in no time - and the in-house know how and resources to do them. (However, like SVT, I suspect the BBC would need to hire in to do the show in HD - unless there was no sport that weekend)

This is a real possibility now as RTS in Serbia has already postponed its national selection show for political reasons. It would be a real shame if it was called off. I think most people would agree that it won't make Serbia look like a very developed, forward thinking, mature nation if it throws its dummies out of the pram and calls it off at such a late stage. After all, if Catalonia became independent from Spain or Scotland and England split I genuinely don't think you would see TVE or BBC taking similar action. They would probably push ahead to show the world their countries are still strong.

Partner website, Gylenneskor.se have stated that a telephone conference between senior EBU officials and reference group members will take place this morning to discuss security concerns about hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade after the violence that has occurred in the city over the passed days.
Of main concern is the attacks on foreign embassies by a tiny minority of hooligans yesterday evening. Attacks on foreign buildings and potential harm to foreign nationals is a major concern for the Eurovision Song Contest organisers with thousands of officials from 42 delegations and fans travelling to Belgrade for the competition in May.

Whilst the EBU has yet to confirm that there are any discussions about the possibility of moving the contest to an alternative venue, they are watching developments very closely. Fans planning to travel to the contest are increasingly concerned about personal security issues.

News of the crisis conference came from Misa Molk of Slovenia yesterday. Slovenia's embassy in Belgrade was attacked by a small number of rioters. She is a member of the EBU's Eurovision Song Contest Reference Group and claimed on television that "that EBU now decided itself in order to collect together itself to one urgent telephone conference - a crisis meeting about the imminent risk in order to entire Eurovision Song Contest 2008 now possible must be moved to another country".

Travel insurance is usually invalidated for anyone travelling to a country that has a government travel warning. esctoday.com urges fans with tickets to check their government's travel status for Serbia to ensure they are aware of any changes in their own country's status with regards to Serbia.

esctoday.com will continue to monitor the situation and is in touch with EBU and key broadcasters and will bring you all the latest developments.

Interesting that Helsinki may be an option it appears.

Not in recent years - not in recent decades - this dates back to the early days when some countries didn't have the infrastructure, technology (for colour) or budget to host the contest. These days the BBC would probably not be the first choice - as other countries have much more recent experience of hosting the event - including the semi finals etc. The BBC haven't hosted since 1998 - the Scandinavian countries have been involved with many contests since then.

(With the exception of Athens, most of the contests in the 00s have effectively produced by the Swedes with some assistants from the Finns I believe - SVT and YLE respectively. Certainly Stockholm, Talinn, Riga, Copenhagen, Kyiv and Helsinki all had a lot of Scandinavian production input... The BBC continued to have input in the post-1998 contests with the scoreboard they implemented being adopted for a couple of years after Birmingham in 1998)

The possibilities if a decision's taken NOT to broadcast the show from Serbia...

Option 1 - Neighbouring country for simple logistical reasons - unlikely though as there's some hostility from Serbia towards neighbouring countries - particularly Slovenia.

Option 2 - A Scandinavian country hosts the show. Very likely. As has been mentioned before, the Nordic nations play a big role now in the annual contest. Most countries ask them to help with design, production, etc as they have a good reputation for producing LIVE event type shows. It's very likely that you would see the show from a city like Stockholm. However, it would be JOINTLY produced by SVT, YLE and NRK for cost and last minute production reasons..

Option 3 - One of the big 4 hosts it. UK, Germany, Spain and France remain the big spenders in the EBU, despite not appearing to do a lot for the contests. Spain and France both have pretty inept broadcasters so its unlikely from them, But Germany can put on a great show as its broadcast network ARD is hugely wealthy and has a lot of resources. The UK'S BBC is technically excellent and provides resources for most of the contests. So the likely outcome in this option would be a contest from a city like Berlin with most on air production from ARD and technical output such as graphics, etc from the BBC.

In the event of Serbia not hosting the Contest this year, I could still imagine some hostility from Serbia even if the contest were to decamp to Berlin, Paris or London, because all of the big four (apart from Spain) have recognised Kosovo's independence.

Indeed, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest#Hosting_2 the BBC hosted it a few times in the 70's despite not winning, in one case because the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place countries all declined to host it! The UK has hosted it more than any other country because of this
