So a country on the Caspian Sea is considered a European country these days?

Geographically, Europe ends at the Urals. The Caspian Sea isn't much further east than Moscow.

But then being in 'Europe' has never been the qualification for being in the EBU

Not sure about Iran, but Iraq and Saudi Arabia are in the European Broadcasting Area

It's the Eurovision Song Contest organised by the Euroipean Broadcasting Union. Membership is not dependent on geographical location.

I preferred the good old days of Colin Berry myself!

Well the second semi final is underway. Now it's song 2 - Sweden. An Abba-esque song wiht eurovision written all over it. Mark my words, that's going through.

It is a VERY Melodifestivalen performance this year. Love the direction - and it looks SO much better with a full house!!

From what I can see, we've got mid-stadium rostra, 2 cranes at the back, 2 cranes at the front, a track mid-stadium and 2 steadis. Maybe noggin can shed a bit more light.

Well I was disimpressed by Czech Republic to start with, but as it went along quite liked it, it's quite catchy and ought to qualify.

Belarus - That's another lively ballad which I'd love to see qualify.

I enjoyed joining in and copying the arm movements etc for Wolves of the Sea. Wolves Of The Sea is the adult kids' version of Viking Warrior - catchy and lively, it ought to qualify and do well in the final on Saturday.

I'm really liking this semifinal - and excellent direction! SEen the steadicam a bit too much though.

Tumble - perhaps it's better to save your comments for one big post at the end?

Regarding the handwritten comments which appear on the flags in the bits between songs, does anyone know what language they're in?
JA

The language of the country being represented in the song.

GEORGIA - "Peace Will Come"
A song about peace, i.e. a protest song, IMO. Protest or political songs don't normally do well, so will it qualify? Got a catchy title "Peace will come", I was singing that without the words in front of me last weekend when I listened to this on the Eurovision website.

Clearly you didn't watch in 1990.
