And the DVD is, of course, SD only... Wonder how long before they release a BluRay!

Yes, BD please, it was disappointing that 2007 and 2008 contests where not released on a HD format.
With BD now the HD format maybe next year we may get it in HD.

Though thankfully BBC HD showed the 2007 Final in HD over here so I have an off-air recording with Sir Tel's commentary in 1080/50i.

SVT HD showed the 2007 semi in HD so I have that with Swedish commentary in 720/50p.

AIUI the Athens contest in 2006 was shot in HD but not broadcast in HD - so outside of the archive HD VTR copies there are no versions available.

One thing that I noticed about Melodifestivalen was the use of the older EBU screen at the beginning and end of the broadcast:

That hasn't been used for a few years now in Eurovision...

In other news, I hope to see Paddy in both the semis. If only there was the option to switch Terry off for the final. He is alright but as the years go on, you can tell he is clueless.

I guess that is what SVT have in their archive. Was that the version used in 2000 when they hosted?

And as the show continues you can tell he's had a drop or two...

Though historically SVT use Jimmy's not Technos...

There wasn't a techno to be seen at ESC in Kyiv (which was effectively an SVT production) - they use the money to have more Jimmy Jibs, as the telescopic nature of the Techno doesn't deliver much extra if you have a couple of very long jibs?

Looking at it again, you're maybe right.. I thought given the angle and the amount of peoples heads to swoop over in the 'mosh' pit in front of the stage and quick retraction may have been needed, rather than extending the arm upwards all the time when not in shot use.

Indeed, albeit with the old SVT logo. And here is that glorious opening all over again! I do wish they would bring back the EBU idents with the broadcaster's logo on it. It just reminds you that the show is being produced by some country's public broadcaster.

As for what people were saying above about a Blu-Ray release, I was very disapointed after getting my surround sound sorted out that this year's DVD wasn't in 5.1. I was all ready to experience it in a different way! Crying or Very sad

In fact, they looped the last part of the 1990's eurovision ident if you look at it carefully on the online stream (i.e. the part just before where the broadcaster's logo used to appear). Curious why they chose to use that particular ident when the current one comes in proper 16:9? The old one was great but now it does look dated and it looks even worse when stretched.

Yep - Technocranes are useful in a studios where you're a bit tight for space - but in the Globen that isn't a problem!

In Kyiv they had a very big jib at the back, and one each side, along with a strange scissor extender on the camera right side of the stage.

They had dual rail cams (two cameras on the same mounting though with different height elevators) mid way between the fixed rostra for the static cameras and the front of the stage. There were peds close to the stage at the cam L and cam R corners, and a rail cam cam L slightly further away. There was also at least one Radio Steadi.

Didn't see a Technocrane at all - though I think I spotted one in Helsinki.

I disagree, I dlslike Paddy O'Connell and also Sara Caywood when she's done it. Sir Terry is the best commentator in Europe and I wish he did the Semi-Finals aswell.

... of course you'll need some idea of Swedish but you'll cope.

Sorry to be pedantic but why can't they use "Storbrittanien" which is Swedish for the UK instead of England?
