Is the reason there are no entries from Wales, Scotland and NI is that they don't have their own channels in the EBU and are covered by the BBC?

If S4C was to join the EBU then Wales could have their own entry, right?

Or have I got hold of the wrong end of the stick and it is just down to cost?

According to the Active members-UK page on the EBU website S4C is an "active member" of the EBU along with Anglia, Border, Central, Channel, Grampian, Granada, ITV London, Meridian, Scottish TV, Tyne Tees, UTV, ITV Wales, Westcountry, ITV West , Yorkshire and Channel 4. If the BBC ever gave up on the Song Contest and if ITV or Channel 4 took it on board instead then I suppose it's possible that they could regionalise it if they really wanted to.

So, purely hypothetically, if ITV were to get the Eurovision we could have 15 regional entries?

However, from what I have heard, the eastern Europeans take this contest extremely seriously, they send their best people! Laughing

And we send Daz Sampson. Honestly, we can never win Eurovision. The last tme we did, it was an American that won it. The previous year, we had an Aussie (though we didn't win, though we scored highly. 6th IIRC).

I thought Katrina was Canadian Confused: Confused: I could be wrong Confused USA and Canada are certainly two countries that don't seem to have that much neighbourly love ! Twisted Evil

Pendants' corner regarding Daz Simpson: Stockport has been a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester since 1974, and Greater Manchester has been county in its own right since that time. Although GM County Council was abolished in 1986, it has still remained a geographic/ ceremonial county. I need to get out more Crying or Very sad

Rumour has it Daz enjoyed himself so much, he is going to try again next year Shocked Maybe he'll do a duet with Cheryl Baker Laughing

I wouldn't have thought so as Wales is part of the United Kingdom, whose national broadcaster is the BBC.

Then again that doesn't apply to Gurnsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man - wonder if they could enter?
(Of course Man doesn't have a TV station, but it does have a national broadcaster)

No, in the same way that German broadcaster ARD can't enter 9 entries

ITV already broadcast Eurovision Song Contest - aswell!!!! They actually televise the Junior Song for Europe and the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

S4C during some part of the 1980's actually showed Jeux Sans Frontier which is an EBU programme (is it still being made????)

Or at least they did - it appears that ITV have now pulled out of the contest, which is not all that surprising really.

I don't think so. The Active Member of the EBU is "Uk Independent Broadcasting" which comprises the regional ITV companies.

In Germany, the Song Contest is broadcast on ARD : a network that's fully regional and works in a way similar to the old ITV where some regional productions are offered to the network and shown nationally. (if you look at the URL posted above, at the bottom of the home page are the logos of the regional companies!) NDR Hamburg offered the German results to the Song Contest this year (on horseback!). So that's still a national vote with one song representing the whole country.

Can't see it listed on the EBU website anymore. It hasn't been shown on the BBC for donkeys years, but I know it was still being shown in many other countries up until a few years ago. I used to quite like it...!
