Hello everyone
I'm new here and I'd just like to get something off my chest! I had a mad discussion last week with a friend of mine - German. I am absolutely convinced that even if we sent Robbie Williams to the Eurovision we would still only be given a few sympathy points. Why does nobody like us? Crying or Very sad
As if that's not enough, they've changed the rules, which if you ask me makes the whole thing less exciting and more or less unwatchable anyway! Ooh, the thing that sparked up the subject was this survey and the results.

If we sent Robbie Williams anywhere we'd do Britain no favours! Daz Sampson ain't much cop either, his routine reminds me of Chris Morris' JLB-8 character. Although I agree about the bloc voting, it's all a bit tedious now

I don't really care if we win or are scored fairly.

The whole thing is an excuse to get some friends round, have a drink and laugh your head off.

Bring it on, that's what I say.

I think the Iraq war has made the UK unpopular on continental Europe.

Plus countries always give high marks for immediate neighbours: Norway/ Sweden, Cyprus/ Greece, Spain/Portugal, former Soviet countries etc. The UK sadly only has one land-linked neighbour... the Republic of Ireland-- who sometimes give us much-needed points. Well the UK has helped them win often enough!! Laughing

The other reason we haven't done well since Katrina and the Waves, is some of the cruddy songs we've put up-- including this year's entry. I can't see Daz Simpson's (c)rap doing that well; but then again, stanger things have happened!! Laughing

As Jimmy Carr once said: "Eurovision is like curling: Loads of countries enter, but only the UK care about winning"

Mr Carr is a bit of a Tw*t, but I think he's got it the wrong way round anyway. The other countries around europe take it much more seriously than we have ever done

And yet we're one of the countries that puts so much into Eurovision we can't get relegated even if we get nul points!

Isn't it the case that a handful of "major" European countries (e.g. UK, France, Germany, etc) mostly/entirely pay to stage the event, no matter what the host country is?

There seems to be a lot of resentment that ever since all the eastern-European countries joined the contest, that the likes of UK/France/Germany don't get much of a look-in in terms of scoring points, despite paying to stage it.

Well, if us paying countries really do resent the current situation, surely the answer is for us to stop paying for it (i.e. scrap Eurovision)? It makes no sense for us to p*ss-and-moan, yet still willing fork out the cash.

Then, if the eastern-European countries want to stage a music contest (whether named "Eurovision" or not, and whether open to western-European entrants or not), then that's entirely up to them.

It's all strayed SO far from the "just a bit of fun" that it originally was, all those decades ago. Anthing that strays THAT far from its original point, should be put out of its misery.

The reason, IMO is that the act representing the UK is always absolutely SH*TE!
The people who vote for our representative(s) are partly to blame.

No, you're confusing 'The Eurovision Song Contest' and 'Eurovision' AKA the EBU.

The UK, France, Germany get a bye into the finals because they are the biggest contributors to the EBU and the Eurovision network. That's not necessarily a financial contribution, it's facilities and audio/video material as well - for example the BBC central control room at TV Centre is a major Eurovision network hub.

The song contest is just one tiny part of Eurovision; it's paid for in part by the EBU and the broadcaster that's hosting it - hence the financial problems that RTE had in the 90's after having to stage it 3 years running
