there is talk that Scotland could enter a song of there own,

That is almost like the episode of The High Life coming true when Scotland entered " Piff Paff Poff ( I Want To Have It Off ". Mind you - it might be in with a chance Wink

Forbes Masson wrote a play called " Mince " which I've seen, and it starts off with Scotland entering the Eurovision Song Contest with a song which is a fantastic pastiche of Waterloo called " Bannockburn " Lol Very Happy

Well it should be celebrated and perhaps entered for the UK in 2009. Add some bagpipes and you never know... Very Happy

When the BBC said they wanted 'known' composers to take part in Eurovision, I wasn't aware that 'well-known' implied 'rubbish' or 'failed'.

So we have a failed EastEnders star, runners up from Joseph and Maria , a failed X Cacktor star, and a group that, from the description, will sound like the Supremes, but having inhaled helium beforehand.

A bit of gospel choir style music might actually have worked quite well, even if they had to do a live downlink from the cabaret. Would certainly have beaten 'would you like something to suck on for landing?'

But as far as Kosovo/Serbia/Albania are concerned, all I will expect is that Cyprus'll vote for Greece again. The phrase 'business as usual' springs to mind.

You said known composers... not known artists.

Yet I know none of those composers either - see the individual artist profiles on the websites.

Of course you knew I meant artistes.

And I thought I was pedantic... Laughing

Not actually true. STV is a full EBU member. It would only need permission to enter if it was an associate member.

It's a full member, but jointly with the other ITV companies, Channel 4 and S4C: http://www.ebu.ch/members/members_active.php

Maybe we really don't want to win any more.

If STV wanted to enter Eurovision with a Scottish entry, the BBC would have to agree to this first AIUI - and this is unlikely... After all - STV would have to host the contest if they won - and that commitment is unlikely from them.

Not actually true. STV is a full EBU member. It would only need permission to enter if it was an associate member. The speculation that Scotland could enter its own song comes from a statement from the EBU which said that Scotland was now allowed to put forward its own song. The rules have been ammended slightly. In the past, Scotland wasn't allowed as the BBC covers Scotland.

In the wildest of situations, whereby STV said it would put forward an entry, the BBC would have to block BBC Scotland viewers from voting so as not to duplicate votes (Scotland wouldn't be entitled to vote as Scotland AND as the UK) But as you can imagine this would get pretty messy and confusing and would also result in Scottish viewers having Eurovision on both BBC1 Scotland AND STV. So, the most likely outcome, if the situation is to change in the future, would be the BBC deciding to put forward seperate entries for Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Again, this is now allowed under the new EBU rules, but it would mean our entries wouldn't be allowed automatic qualification to the finals.

So - basically, the EBU has opened up a mega confusing one here!! Rolling Eyes

But it is never going to happen...

The UK is pretty unique in the "4=1" country make-up (Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England=UK) - and as long as the BBC are in the "big four" in terms of EBU funding, they will have a lot of say in how the EBU rules are framed AND interpreted.

STV would have an extremely uphill struggle getting an independent entry in - and frankly I suspect it is more likely that BBC Scotland would launch a bid given the current situation ITV is in... I can't see STV wanting to host the entire contest if they won.

Hmmm - well at least the licence fee payer won't be looking to fund a contest in 2009...

Yep - and the BBC has a much "bigger" role in the EBU than ITV. At times we've effectively run the organisation... (And we have a major role in one of the biggest bits - EVN - the Eurovision News Exchange service)

Well out of yet another bad bunch it's Loveshy - Mr Gorgeous that will be getting my vote.

There isn't one strong song there at all this year. I wonder what the wild card song will be like?

It isn't that kind of wildcard.

The six acts go head to head in pairs during the first show - with the judges chosing 3 - one from each pair - with the wild card being a 4th act from the six also chosen to go through.

So two of the six acts are ditched by the judges, and then the public chose from this final four.

The whole line up is very "Reality" - all 4 soloists are from reality TV shows (admittedly Michelle Gayle was a star before her "Reborn in the USA" experience) as are one of the girl groups (They were in Clea which was the group made up of members who didn't get into Girls Aloud on Pop Stars:The Rivals ISTR) and the show itself is very formatted, along the lines of Strictly/Joseph.

That said - it should mean we have performers experienced in live TV on quite large shows, and who can sing live in a credible manner.

Jessica Garlick, who gave us by far our best result of recent years when she came 3rd, was an original "Popstars" candidate, and James Fox didn't embarass himself in vocal terms (though the song was pretty dire)
