Wales? Not for long...

How is it going to go ahead this year? No audience?

It's being hosted in a TV studio in Warsaw so it's likely TVP won't have an audience for this edition.

In the year that Eurovision didn't happen, it seems to be getting more radio airplay than ever. Radio 2's record or the week is Husavik and they also seem to have Iceland's Think About Things on regular rotation as well which is pretty impressive to be still getting played on mainstream radio in July. The story of Fire Saga's been as high as number 2 on the iTunes chart, wonder what is the highest position the standard yearly compilation has ever reached?

Australia have also unsurprisingly pulled out, and I suspect a few more will follow.

Just cancel it. If countries are pulling out it clearly isn't safe for it to go ahead.

Yes, coronavirus might still be around by November so maybe move it to 2021 in the same host city or a different city in Poland.

There's only two withdrawals so far which isn't unusual for JESC. 12 confirmed so far including 1 debut which again isn't particularly different to a normal year before the official participation list has been confirmed. A normally reliable Spanish site is saying the BBC are actively considering joining surprisingly.

As I've said before I think regardless of the Covid situation the contest will go ahead, it just might be that not all performances actually come from Poland. If the virus does get worse again they need some way of testing out how a worst case scenario ESC would work in May and the Junior contest is a perfect opportunity, their only opportunity really, to do that.

Yes, gives them the chance to trial a low key contest.

Really? Interesting though I wonder what channel they’d show it on? CBBC? It didn’t rate well when itv dabbled with it when it started (think it was on ITV the first year and ITV2 the second then never appeared again). Somehow in the U.K. it’s considered kitsch and slightly nauseating to see kids giving it their all. The Minipops effect? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minipops

Yes, I believe a few features that have made their way to the main song contest have been trialled at JESC. It’s certainly a reasonable theory that they might be trying a few things out. Interesting though this years Not-Eurovision from a Hilversum TV studio was, it did seem to suffer from being far too serious and was very slow. I stuck with it, but I know many casual Eurovision fans who gave up after 20 minutes.

I don't think Europe Shine A Light is in anyway indicative of what a stripped down or alternative contest would be like though.

Undoubtedly that show struggled to balance the seriousness of a global pandemic with the fun and escapism of Eurovision. For a UK audience that was, at the time, beginning to feela bit more optimistic about things, it didn't really hit the right note. (It rated lower than the BBC in-house 'chose your favourite Eurovision moment' show that was broadcast before it)

However I think it was kind of an impossible ask for the Dutch to make a show that worked tonally across a Europe that was in different stages of the outbreak (though it did feel a few weeks late in tone to a UK audience)

The show's not really like that any more, it's more similar to The Voice Kids and I think that show's popularity across Europe has actually increased JESC's popularity too. It's a really well produced show now and pretty much feels like an extension of ESC rather than the weird 'kids show but not a kids show' vibe they had in the early years when it was on ITV.

Exactly - they just really misjudged the tone back in May (and will have learned from that) in offering a show which was sombre and a bit too reflectful when the audience really wanted an escape for a couple of hours from what was happening. There were also clearly insurance related restrictions on exactly what they could and couldnt' do as well.

Yes - they couldn't run a 'Song Contest' in any way shape or form without compromising their insurance claims AIUI. (That's why they couldn't run the videos or have remote performances AND let the audience vote)
