*sigh*

You keep saying that only BBC, RTE & SVT have made innovative productions however you’ve happily ignored the two most innovative productions of their time, 1996 and 2010, both by NRK. The 1996 production in particular set the standard for later years. NRK introduced virtual reality, a massive arena and most importantly humour into the script. The 2010 production was equally streets ahead of anything we’d seen at that point.

I’d also go so far as to highlight 2014 in Copenhagen. Putting aside the financial mismanagement DR put on a visually spectacular show that was truly excellent to watch.

I'd second that re: NRK and - to a degree - DR. ISTR that DR also introduced CuePilot timecode slaved, automatic vision mixing - arguably one of the biggest innovations to hit Eurovision in production terms in recent years. (2013 was the last manually vision mixed show)

As I said in a thread elsewhere, historically there's only the BBC, RTE and SVT who genuinely try to make an effort to innovate and only one of those three broadcasters are going to deliver a win soon (Clue: they don't speak English!)

Umm - I've yet to meet a Swede who doesn't speak near-perfect English... I doubt you'll find anyone at SVT who doesn't...

Think JamesM was referring to it not being an English-speaking country , which it obviously isn't, despite the proficiency of its natives at English.

It was relatively certain that to save expenditure KAN, with the politically charged and financially strapped discussions surrounding ESC2019, would go down the Screens approach. Producing multiple effects cheaply. The programming of them will be of course be key.

Yep - I know - but the sentence described the broadcaster as not speaking English... To be honest I wouldn't describe any of the Nordic nations as a non-English-speaking country... In Finland kids now start English language lessons in their first year of school - aged 7.

Think it was clear what he meant though.

Yep - but I can't think of a worse way of putting it Smile

If the Gold Coast get their way they'll be hosting Eurovision Asia in December 2019.

For a second there, I was wondering why a place in Africa would be hosting Eurovision Asia...

Well....a city in Asia will host a European song competition next year!

There's not a lot of love for 2010 in fan circles, but I think that's for the same reasons as 2018.

Hopefully KAN won't make the mistake ORF did in Vienna, and do a lot of long-lens shooting. With screens you don't have much perspective to work with, so you don't want to be losing the little you have by shooting from the back of the arena. Thats what made 2017 a somewhat better show than 2015 despite a near-identical arena layout - UA:PBC shot a lot closer and it looked much better for it, although they were far more creative with the Spidercam and other units (particularly with the one that shot through the "beehive" as it became known.)

Having spent nearly a day in total standing in the Altice Arena this year I have little love left for Eurovision 2018! Thank God my favourite won after all that standing LOL.

Well I thought 2010 was excellent - great hosts, competent staging, brilliant interval act and a good script. For me, 2011 in staging terms was far worse, with cameras so far back and right on the ends of their zooms, plus an LED set that looked awful on tighter shots as a result.
