Cup Final Day!

Cup final back at 3pm next year then?!

Even a 5pm kick off with extra time and penalties would make it very tight for the trophy presentation and wrap up before 8pm.

Cup Final Day!

BBC will have to go a long while without a decent news bulletin if the match goes to penalties as it won't be finished until 7.40-7.50.

They could dump the news to BBC Two I guess, but I think they'll just go for an earlier kick off.

I am not sure the BBC would be able to persuade the FA to move the time - remember they will be international contracts which would be affected as well and might require compensation to be paid if the time changed back.

This is awkward. I suspect the contingency will be to have BBC TWO ready to be scheduled to allow preemption (Dads Army Double Bill!) at around 1920 to move the FA Cup Final ET and Pens if required to complete the coverage there.

Surely the evening news will move to 1600, regions at 1610, allowing for a 45 minute warm-up show before the match? Late will more than likely be after Eurovision or moved to BBC Two.

Looking at it you'd either have to wrap up very quickly, or like you say set BBC Two up To broadcast the back end.

Late News is always after Eurovision but there's no real reason it couldn't go on BBC Two.

This is either an incredibly easy or incredibly difficult square to circle, depending on the contracts signed between the broadcasters and the event organisers.

Basically: has the BBC got either Eurovision or the FA Cup Final on the basis that they must show them on BBC1?

If the answer is that one of them must be shown on BBC1, then it's the immovable object. Either shunt Eurovision to BBC2 until the FA Cup Final is done, or shunt the FA Cup Final overrun over to BBC2.

If the answer is they must both be shown on BBC1, then things get problematic.

I don't know what the situation is with the FA Cup final. It may well be that the FA hasn't proscribed a rule for it on the basis it would assume BBC1 would want to show the game on its main channel. The only thing I know for certain about Eurovision is that you must show the final and the two semi-finals. I think - and I don't know where I'm getting this - that there's a rule that the final must be on your main channel. Certainly RTE show the semis on RTE Two and the final on RTE One, and they're more open to leaving big events on Two (such as football matches involving Ireland etc). But I don't know if that's because they have to.

I don't believe there is any requirement for the FA Cup Final to be screened on BBC One, but I'm not sure what it would look like to relegate a Category A event (ie a 'crown jewel') to BBC Two.

There's no rule for Eurovision regarding what channel airs the contest. In fact in Italy the final has only recently transferred back from RAI 2 to RAI 1 after decades of being on the smaller channel.
