Personal views aside, how does Brexit affect our participation once we leave the EU? Will we be treated as a guest participant like Australia and Israel?

It's called Eurovision, not EUvision.

We're leaving the EU, not Europe .

Some people just never seem to be able to grasp this simple fact do they.

Europe is not the EU.

Can you imagine the Panic in the European Broadcasting Union if the BBC said they were leaving? Very Happy

Yes, the government make that mistake regularly hence the unnecessary rush to give up everything that includes the E word

There probably wouldn't be. The BBC's role in the EBU has diminished in recent years. Certainly the days when it was a major technical hub for the network are long gone.

It might well be another case of they don't need us as much as we need them
I was wondering just how much this year's contest cost in total and how much the UK contributed.

Probably not a figure that's obtainable, I'm pretty sure that the EBUs contribution contest is just out of their general funds, it's not something that each broadcaster pays for
Quote:
No doubt the cost has rocketed in recent years.

It has but so will the sponsorship of the event

It's just we're not aware of that as the BBC can't show the full credits

Has IPBC been given full EBU membership yet? Or is it still on the special agreement mostly just for Eurovision.

Their membership is still pending, according to https://www.ebu.ch/about/members?country=israel

For the record ....

Probably goes without saying that the novelty of Australia taking part has well and truly worn off now. I can't see them pulling out for a while yet, though.

(I'm certainly not against their participation, mind - I would have been delighted if Dami Im had won two years ago.)

Big debate on GMB earlier about wether Netta's performance was cultural appropriation of the Japanese people. I don't see it as cultural appropriation. It's all a bit of fun in my eyes and I must say it was enjoyable to watch her perform.

I think the idea of a Big Five needs to change, and the UK should compete in the semi-finals. I don’t think it would affect viewing figures if we didn’t make it to the final - watching the UK entry is probably right down the list of why people watch.

If you want the U.K. to no longer compete in Eurovision that’s the best way to achieve it- few failures to qualify for the final and its more ammunition for the “why do we bother entering” brigade.

2 - (and worst) if it's close with the points - they announce the total points for 2nd, and then all attention heads off to the winner.

This is all easily fixed with better planning.

If the final result is not going to be close, and towards the end it is clearly about to cross a point where nobody can overtake the leader, then that needs to be announced. You point out that if the next batch of points goes to Austria, then Lithuania has won it. Tension music and then big reveal.

If it's not close, and it's right down the wire as it was this year, then they need to say "one of these countries is about to receive 240 points. The other will receive 280, and will win. The winner of the song contest is..."

Cut the winner celebrating, audience applause, and then during the winner's victory walk to the stage, quick split screen where you dump the remaining scores onto the board (graphics, rather than presenter reading them out).

It's weird that they haven't nailed this yet.

I wonder how Eurovision would have handled the incident with SuRie's song had it happened a few decades ago, say with Emma or Samantha Janus back in the early 1990s?

My guess involves an instant abrupt stopping of both song and contest, cut to black screen/still logo for viewers at home, and a few quips from Wogan over the silence, filling us in with the situation as order is slowly restored - something he'd have been good at I think, getting the balance right with the seriousness of the situation but with the right amount of gentle comedy to not alarm viewers too much. Then eventually a cut back to the stage and the song beginning again as if nothing had happened. The resumption of the song mid-performance in the way SuRie handled it just wouldn't have been possible I think, and there certainly wouldn't have been any supportive singing along from the middle-aged officials in suits that the contest's live audience used to be.
