Obviously Brexit will get the blame if we lose and despite some awful efforts over the years we've ended up at the wrong end of the voting board (as have others) a couple of times in the last few years with entries which should have done better, but in all honesty I suspect Europe care alot less about Brexit than we do. They just think we're fools.

People were still blaming "Iraq" as the one and only reason for UK's lack of success until a couple of years ago. I think in 2000 Nicki French's poor performance was blamed on Britain not adopting the Euro as its currency, and there was at least one contest in the 1980s when British football hooliganism was given as a reason.

The first full contest I watched all the way through was in 2002, when Jessica Garlick came third - and I seem to remember she didn't get much praise at all even though that would be an amazing result today, most articles and interviews focusing on the fact that she didn't win! We'd had three poor results in a row before that and Katrina & The Waves was only five years ago, so third then was still seen as an average UK result and a return to the status quo. Then came Jemini...

Yes - and Jemini was all about the Iraq war, and nothing to do with it being an awful song sung really badly Wink
Brekkie, TG and DE88 gave kudos

Amusing reading these email comments from the 2002 contest - "It's a fix", "Europe hates us", "we should pull out", "everyone voted for their neighbours" etc, very few congratulating Jessica in any way for placing third. Last year Bulgaria's contestant was given a heroes' welcome at the airport for coming fourth!

Particularly amused at the grumbles that Latvia that year only won because "the Baltics all voted for each other". That'll be three countries, then...

To be fair that was the reason why the UK were booed at the 1984 contest in Luxembourg as it came not long after England fans rioted in the city.

Funny how those who hate the contest are so desperate to find excuses for the UK's bad results. Apparently we should win every year owing to our music heritage, regardless of how dross our entry is.

Neighbourly voting helps keep countries off the bottom of the board, but not to win.

It's interesting to note that we generally give high points to the winning entry so we can't bemoan its success. We even gave 12 points to Lordi.

Yes - you don't win through neighbourhood voting (which isn't political - it's just a shared musical scene in many cases) - but it does help you avoid being at the very bottom. You only win if you get decent votes consistently from everyone.

Yes - though the jury vs televote split in the UK is often hilarious.
