Not that it's relevant right now - but if Australia wins, the contest still has to be held in Europe. They would work with a local broadcaster (e.g. SVT in Sweden) but the Contest would be "hosted" by Australia. Or something.

Yes this was raised when they first competed, I believe I read they would partner with Germany.

Pretty sure this was just rumoured rather than fact.

Yes - I think caused because the SBS entry partnered with Universal Germany (i.e. a German label) for the European track release?

That Sand video is from 22nd March, when the issue came to a head. I'm expecting more from the EBU on Monday, once Deltenre's letter gets a formal response, no such response has afaik been made.

I'm pretty sure that this mire is likely to cost Sand his position in the long run, the acceptance of the Ukrainian entry last year, which as overall supervisor he had the final say, becomes even more naive and less tenable as the days go by. Quite who'll succeed him though is difficult. Both his able deputies, Vladislav Yakovlev and Sietse Bakker have moved on.

An almighty mess.

I'd say Bjorkman will almost certainly get the gig.

I can see why people think this. Personally someone like Martin Österdahl - who Exec Produced 2013 and 2016 alongside Christer - would be a more obvious choice I'd think - if he's still interested in the gig.

If the contest is having to navigate ever-choppier political waters - I'm not sure Christer (who is very much a 'creative' Exec) would be the right choice. You probably need an experienced, political and editorially aware, Exec, with a background based in making tricky and nuanced decisions.

True, but bringing Bjorkman on board to make the show better television is no bad thing. Say what you like about the new system but it was exciting right to the wire.

Also, this is a bit of a U-Turn from the EBU from "We must respect the laws of the host country" to "The host country must make an exception of its laws."

I'm expecting the EBU to eventually say "Russia will unfortunately have to miss this year" BUT "Ukraine will have to miss next year and probably the year after that due to their behaviour".

They could say that. But as has been said, do you want ten hours of television being produced by a broadcaster you've just told to sod off?

We've had two trips East this decade, and both of them have been drama after drama.

Well what do you think will happen? Truth of the matter is, if they postpone or cancel, the money's wasted. So Ukraine have to host.

They don't look like they're gonna postpone the ban, therefore what I said seems likely.

Russia need to select a different singer. Simples. The way Russia is being portrayed as the victim here is astonishing.

Bit of production news.

The Opening will include an orchestra playing a medley of Eurovision hits, including Wild Dances (although Wikipedia suggests it will be Jamala performing some new material)

And although it probably won't be shown in the UK, Ruslana is confirmed as the Interval Act for SF2 performing a new single.

The reports today of gays being rounded up and shot in Chechnya is not going to do Russia very well in the Eurovision stakes.

I wish the EBU would just grow a pair and kick them out.
