Pointless speculation. The contest will go ahead in Kyiv, the EBU would lose too much face if Ukraine could not host. We just need to expect a smaller scale, less expensive production.

Which probably wouldn't be a bad thing.

Totally agree. Whilst we all love the SVT hosted contests they have set unrealistic expectations for other countries.

As I've said previously on here, the Malta JESC of last autumn should be looked at as an example of a small scale event with excellent production values. Worth anyone who's interested in the main contest dipping into to see how it was done even if the thought of the watching the whole thing is a bit scary.

Actually SVT were charged with the responsibility to bring down the cost of hosting the contest by the ebu who were worried that it was becoming too big a burden on host broadcasters. NRK famously dropped the World Cup to be able to afford to host. Malmo in particular was seen as a much smaller, yet still very successfully staged contest. Not sure how Stockholm compared in terms of cost, but the show is smaller in scale than it was.

I believe Stockholm is quoted as the cheapest contest of recent times (if you weight for inflation etc.)

I agree totally. I believe last year’s contest cost around £16 million and SVT managed to make a profit. This was largely down to the economies of scale and the experience of hosting the much larger Melodifestivalen each year. Also, SVT maximised income by ensuring that fans didn’t really have to leave the ‘Eurovision bubble’ if they didn’t want to. You were able to spend all day in either the Eurovision Village or EuroClub/Fan Café. Profits from these went directly back into hosting the contest. In addition these facilities were open to the public during the afternoons and this was another revenue stream. It’s important to note that SVT are the only host broadcasters to accredit general fans (F2 accreditation), this ensures that fans will stay in the ‘bubble’ and spend their money financing the contest. A virtuous circle really.

However, don’t forget Gina Dirawi’s comments when awarding the Swedish votes. She said she was in another arena full of fans (Tele2 Arena), and they had another arena ‘just because we can afford to’. Not exactly the comments of a broadcaster holding back on costs. Yes, Malmo was a much smaller production but that was kinda thrown out the window with Stockholm hosting. SVT went all out to demonstrate they could host the biggest and best contest to date.

The last JESC turned into an utter disaster, the whole production was collapsing by the end of the night. It was totally devoid of atmosphere and the voting sequence was dreadful. It wasn't a patch on their 2014 show. I certainly wouldn't hold it up as a model example.

However, that arena was full of fans who'd paid at least £15 each to be there and were buying very expensive drinks (I should know, I was one of them) so it may have contributed to the bottom line.

That is true! Those of us inside Globen weren't exactly paying cheap for the drink😂
