I've compiled a collection of statistics about every country that has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest from 1956 to 2016. These include the number of years past winners took to achieve their first win, countries still waiting for their first win, and the number of years since each former winner last won.

Eurovision Song Contest Statistics 2016

Despite the UK's poor showing in the Eurovision Song Contest for several years now, the UK is still one of best countries of all time in Eurovision. I've compiled league tables showing how every country that has ever performed in the Eurovision Song Contest from 1956 to 2016.

Indeed. I'll be running the BBC and World feeds in-sync for the semis so can opt out of the opt outs! I'm actually out every night on a job during SF week so I might just watch the damn thing on RTE Player (is that HD now?)

May be HD, but I bet it's 25p. If any show was going to benefit from 50Hz motion it's the ESC ...

That seems to have happened with this year's DVDs - 25p for the first time (even after what happened in 2010).

Yes. The problem the UK has is that it still associates Eurovision with a 70s ' Boom Bang a Bang ' ' La la la la la ' kind of music. The reality in the modern era is that songs like that get nowhere . Look at the winners over the last 10 years or so. None of them have been 'stereotypical Eurovision songs'.

There have been recent-ish songs that have had quite similar lyrics to those songs and come quite high in the results.
eg. Similar in a way to "My heart goes Boom bang-a-bang, boom bang-a-bang" etc are:

2001. Sweden - Lyrics: "Listen to your heartbeat" - came 5th place.
2004. Ukraine - Lyrics: "shi-di-ri-di-duy, shi-di-ri-di-da-na” and “Day-na-da-na-da” - 1st place.
2009. Turkey - Lyrics: "Can you feel the rhythm in my heart - the beat's going "Dum tek tek". 4th place.
2012. Russia - Lyrics: "Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!". 2nd place.
2014. Ukraine - Lyrics "My heart is like a clock". 6th place.

So have they messed up the mastering of this year's DVDs then? 25p rather than 50i? (In 2010 it was obviously a cock-up...)

Messed up (from what it should be - ie. from what it was in original broadcast) in that it looks all 25p (rather than part 25p/50i like 2010. ie. it doesn't change part way like in that year). They probably did it (film-effected the 2016 DVDs) intentionally for some reason though, despite the broadcast being 50i and despite the fact that all TVs & players can de-interlace (there was also some picture breakup on semi 2).

Last time it was caused by a mastering cock-up I believe. Wouldn't be surprised if that had happened again.

Chances are they were given an HD 1080i master to produce the DVD from, which will have required down-scaling to 576i. I suspect this will have been done in software - and there's every chance they messed up in the 1080i25 to 576i25 conversion and went to 576p25 instead.

Ridiculous thing to do intentionally...
