Crazy idea no1: How about the votes going by the size of each country? ie Big five 20, 18, 16, 14 10, while the smaller countries have 10, 8, 6, 4, 1 1 1 1 etc?

Aren't all those country feeds from satellite there were lots of voting feeds on 7e well it was in the past.

Ah, OK. I was quite amused that the Vienna results appeared to be native SD, I suspect ORF used one of their SNG vans for that feed ?

Size? Population more like. However the current voting is too traditional, and needs not changing, it's also unfair and would probably prove unpopular for the smaller countries.

Maybe Smile I wasn't at home to try it but usually 7e lights up with voting feeds all in 4:2:2 and SD

Yep, there is an issue with automatic qualification. We don't get to polish the song before the final (for example, Serbia seemed to improve between the two heats) and there isnt the same familiarity.

Didn't harm Italy did it? If we enter a good song the semi-final isn't an issue, though personally I do think now only the winner (or perhaps the top 3-5) should qualify and the "big 5" go through the same process as everyone else. Nobody in the UK watches the Eurovision Song Contest for the UK entry anymore (as generally we're ****), so it wouldn't affect BBC viewing figures at all.

Also Graham Norton did a superb job last night - light hearted but unlike Wogan he understands the contest and that people don't vote for us because we enter **** songs, not because of the myth of political voting. I think he gets the tone just right, although like with BBC3 do wish that during the intro and one of the recaps he'd keep quiet.

P.S. The televoting results have been announced and Italy would have won if it had been on public vote alone, with Sweden third behind Russia. The UK would have got a couple more points out of it and finished 24th and just to rub it in, Austria would still have had 0.

The UK televote put Lithuania at number 1, followed by Poland, Sweden, Italy and Australia. Latvia, Russia, Belgium, Serbia and Israel complete our top 10, while France is last. The jury voted for Sweden then Australia, Israel, Italy and Latvia with Armenia in last place.

As for the future although I'd like to see what ITV or C4 would do with the selection process I do think at the very least the BBC need to return final responsibility for selecting the song to the audience - whether that's through a TV show or just through radio or online, at least let viewers pick the best of the worst, even if the audition process is pretty much the same. I also think it would give the act going through to represent the UK a bit of confidence if they knew they'd been chosen to do so by the fans rather than some unknown faces at the BBC.

I agree. People argue "the public chose Scooch" but if you don't field any novelty acts in the first place, they're not there for the public to choose from in the first place!

Weren't the EBU talking about making national finals compulsory a few years ago?

At least Lithuania and Poland (especially) were a lot more listenable than last year, however I have a feeling the diaspora may have contributed.

We are at the point where you might as well get the public involved because the "professionals" choosing our songs are making a mess of things anyway.

With the right staging and presentation (God, we're trusting the BBC on this) you can push the public towards the right act anyway. See The X Factor for many instances.

We could do with some sort of attention grabbing situation like Danny Boyle doing the staging, but the BBC aren't going to take it seriously enough as the public don't. Chicken and egg.

The public do though. Both amongst the fans and the wider media nobody is saying it's fine for the BBC to act the way they do because it's just Eurovision - most are quite embarrassed by it now.

Three points.
1) Is there someone in the comms box with Mr Norton? I ask this because he completely missed the huge 5 points awarded to the UK when they are first displayed in the 1-5 part, and only noticed it where the positions were recalculated. Also he was all at sea working out some of the maths. It really needs someone pointing at the monitor in the box, and someone to work out the points needed to get over the line and pass that to him. Having both the viewers and the national commentator confused at the same time (may to some be part of the fun) but it's not very professional.

2) Did we ever go back the dropped line national mark award presenters?

3) And were those marks added to the scoreboard before the next voting award country? It was never mentioned that they had.
Maybe next year, to prevent dropped lines it may be a better idea to pre-rec them and turn them around in EVS. That way, you'll make the awarding process cleaner, and, remove the monstrous gaps, singing, false trip mark awards, and the blatant running the fact up a flag pole that the 12 has nothing to do with the singer - and more to how close they are to the mark givers on Google Maps.
