Spider Op. I want that on my passport!

That would make sense alright noggin. But most of the camera shakes are coming from the peds on the ground. Like the ops cannot keep pace with things. Perhaps matters will improve by Thursday/Saturday.

I get the feeling some of the jumping is 'style' - but they aren't quite going for it enough. It's an all or nothing thing - you have to commit if you are going to do it.

There are also some wobbly shots from tripods on (bouncing?) FOH platforms by the look of it.

Some of the steadicam work isn't great either.

Where are the jibs/technocranes? I don't remember seeing one in shot on Tuesday night.
Usually you see one stage left/right doing a fair amount of 'heavy lifting' work during the performances.
But ORF appear to be using a front of stage railcam, steadycam(s), peds, the spidercam, and a wondering PSC in the crowd giving dreary glimpses of the stage between waving flags and the back of peoples heads.
I'm guessing there is one, but way back in the hall for crowd swoop shots, rather than performance angles.

I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but Kenneth Bruce has just broadcast to the nation, on BBC Radio 2, that viewers in the UK will be able to vote both via phone and via the Eurovision app. Presumably it's no longer just a conduit for a premium rate text.

EDIT: Congratulations to DVB Cornwall for posting first, and for listening to Radio 2.

I expect it will use SMS (or make a shortcode phone call) - but not a hugely premium rate number. Suspect costs will be similar to mobile shortcode and landline phone voting (enough to cover operation and collation costs but not to make a profit)

I'd be surprised if they used IP voting, particularly as it would make the contest liable to DDoS attacks, or demand surges taking out the back end. (SVT had to suspend their app voting in the Melodifestivalen final and discard all votes cast via that method because it fell over. They were using a particularly intensive system though - not a vote for the song you wanted to win, but up to 5 votes for every song...)

I was thinking it might be a shortcode phone call - I thought their issue previously was that text voting could mean votes going astray.

If it is indeed an SMS, it would be odd if they allowed app voting, but not separate SMS voting.

I've found a page on the BBC Eurovision site that explains how the app voting will work.

Quote:
The app works by populating your phone with the number of the country you want to vote for. Votes made through the app will be charged at 15 p per call from your mobile.

It is interesting how SVT, having set the new standard for Eurovision, may inadvertently have made future contests less polished than they otherwise might have been in their 'host style', as other broadcasters simply cannot operate in the production language that they are now all but obliged to operate to.

Looking forward to the next installments.
I must say I'd be quite happy for Sweden to win this weekend for that very reason!

I watched the second semi-final preview videos yesterday afternoon and again just now. Based on my latest viewing of them, I here are my preferences for tonight's semi-finalists:

Most want to qualify: Sweden, Switzerland, Cyprus, Slovenia.
Would like to qualify: Any six of: Lithuania, Ireland, San Marino, Montenegro, Israel, Azerbaijan, Poland.
Prefer not to qualify: Malta, Norway, Portugal, Czech Republic, Iceland.
Definitely don't want to qualify: Latvia.

Of course my preferences may change after watching tonight's live performances on TV.

Sweden, Norway, Slovenia and Azerbaijan will definitely qualify, the rest is all to play for.

Thanking you. I think I'm going to sync the TIVO box with YouTube by pausing BBC at 20:00.00 and then start it running on delay when YouTube catches up. Thinking then is I can flick over to YouTube during the Interval and any other periods Mel decides she's going to ruin with her verbal diahorrea.

Brilliant interview now on BBC Radio 2 Eurovision, Scott Mills with BBC Radio 3's Tom Service discussing classical music's continuing influence on Austrian popular music.

Disappointed with the lack of pre title VT's (or non exsistance of them). They seem to just go straight into the title sequence. Hope they don't do this for the final as it's always a nice buildup.

Also what was that semi final 1 montage all about? Sack your editor.

See Saturday's show is an EPIC length, 215mins scheduled, if that overruns God help us.
