Interesting insight. Are we the only country with these rules? I would have thought there'd be at least either an EU, or EBU standardisation here?

Really not a fan of the direction this year. And when they do go from a decent shot to another, its not cutting in time to the music.

And why is every song lit in white?

They are using CuePilot automatic vision mixing driven by the timecode of the backing track (as DR did last year, and as Melodifestivalen has for the last two years). That means the cut happens where the director wants it, precisely down to the frame. If they enter the wrong cut point, it will consistently happen off the beat...

Or they may have had to ditch CuePilot and go manual for some of them? It was very ragged in places.

Last year looked good. This year, not so much. There were a few songs where I can't believe they were running it off time-code, because I can't imagine the delegations agreeing to the pacing of the shots. Then there was the strange obsession with the overhead shot, even when there was nothing other than pretty graphics to look at from that angle.

I'm going to hope that they had some sort of issues, and it'll end up looking much better on Saturday.

Eurovision Song Contest 2015 Semi-Final 1 Results
Here are the results, which were announced in a random order at 21:56 BST.

My desired qualifiers: The Netherlands, Greece, Estonia, Belarus, Russia, Denmark, plus four (and no more) of Moldova, Armenia, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Serbia, Hungary, Romania .

Actual qualifiers (in order of announcement): Albania, Armenia, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Greece, Estonia, Georgia, Serbia, Belgium.

Bold entries represent the actual qualifiers that match my preferences.

OUT: Moldova, The Netherlands, Finland, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Belarus, Denmark.

What a shock result! I'm gutted and deeply upset neither The Netherlands nor Denmark qualified as I thought both were among tonight's best songs. At the other extreme, I'm appalled and disgusted Georgia and Belgium qualified as I thought they were two of tonight's worst songs. The Netherlands and Denmark deserved the places Georgia and Belgium took. Thank heavens Finland are out as their entry was, in my opinion, the absolute worst. I'm glad Greece, Estonia and Russia are through as I thought they were three of the best songs tonight.

Is the Pope Catholic?

The UK has probably the strictest rules on FPA and PSE compliance of any country in the world.

It's not just strobes. It's repeated motion, repeated patterns as well. A camera panning across railings can fail. A track past demonstrators holding placards can fail. A static picture with repeated lines can fail. It's not just large area luminance changes (i.e. flashing)

Last year was directed by the bloke who created CuePilot - so it should have looked good... It's used for all the big shows in Denmark, so the camera crew will have been used to it as well. I wonder if using a new system and new ways of working isn't proving a brilliant idea?

One reason some countries have taken to CuePilot - and other's haven't - is that music is scripted for TV very differently around the world. The UK has used beat/bar counting for TV music scripting , whereas other countries have used second counting (which is useless for a live band - which Eurovision isn't. I think that is what SVT did in Malmo which was manually cut)

Indeed. I'm not familiar with any other country where warnings are given about flash photography in news reports.

So we're literally the only place in the world where Eurovision effectively isn't compliant without plastering warnings over the transmission left, right and centre? It's like the repeated THE UK DOES NOT VOTE TONIGHT stuff, which Scott actually made a joke of when a viewer picked up on it. I just think the lengths the BBC have to go to in the name of making a show happily transmitted around the rest of the world compliant shows up how soft in the head we are.

At least they showed one of the recaps although I always think they'd be better showing the second one. Then, it's fresh in the memory when you're watching the results. That's the one your mum liked, that's the ones who looked like they were in JCS, that's the one who sounded a bit like Celine Dion, that's the punk rockers etc

I really liked the show opening- reminded me a lot of the 2000 opening! Nice to see the orchestra is back too.
As for BBC3 and the This is an area we need to be better Wink

Indeed, Big Brother's Little Brother in 2007 had a lot of "whip pans" that were edited out of the repeats, as seen in a video uploaded by A Former Member.

And from a comment underneath the video:

Quote:
I worked on BBLB. We were always getting told off about whip pans. They freak out [about] this thing called the Harding FPA machine test which tests footage to see if it could trigger an Epilepsy seizure. Channel 4 get scared and take them out of the repeats.

I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but Kenneth Bruce has just broadcast to the nation, on BBC Radio 2, that viewers in the UK will be able to vote both via phone and via the Eurovision app. Presumably it's no longer just a conduit for a premium rate text.

EDIT: Congratulations to DVB Cornwall for posting first, and for listening to Radio 2.

Ken Bruce's mid morning radio show is infinitely preferable to anything that's available on
TV at that time of the day. Can I suggest that some posters refrain from torturing themselves
any further every day watching the VD Show or London Live, and just relax with Ken's prog Laughing

You get the odd action film with gunfights that turn into a bit of a blur because they have to suppress the flicker of gunshots. I think they do something with blue flashing lights on reality police shows too - it always looks a bit odd.
