Interesting that the Official Eurovision App is being used for voting purposes this year in the UK.

I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but Kenneth Bruce has just broadcast to the nation, on BBC Radio 2, that viewers in the UK will be able to vote both via phone and via the Eurovision app. Presumably it's no longer just a conduit for a premium rate text.
EDIT: Congratulations to DVB Cornwall for posting first, and for listening to Radio 2.

I expect it will use SMS (or make a shortcode phone call) - but not a hugely premium rate number. Suspect costs will be similar to mobile shortcode and landline phone voting (enough to cover operation and collation costs but not to make a profit)
I'd be surprised if they used IP voting, particularly as it would make the contest liable to DDoS attacks, or demand surges taking out the back end. (SVT had to suspend their app voting in the Melodifestivalen final and discard all votes cast via that method because it fell over. They were using a particularly intensive system though - not a vote for the song you wanted to win, but up to 5 votes for every song...)

I was thinking it might be a shortcode phone call - I thought their issue previously was that text voting could mean votes going astray.
If it is indeed an SMS, it would be odd if they allowed app voting, but not separate SMS voting.

Either way, fantastic news that the BBC has finally caught up with the 21st Century.

It's nothing to do with the BBC catching up, the app wasn't used because it was based on sending SMS's, which aren't guaranteed to be delivered in the voting period but will still be charged. Go have a look at the phone voting scandals and you should understand why it wasn't being used (even though the app was still available - it's not a BBC built system) - along with SMS voting.

Well it seems fine for other countries. It's like we have some weird fear culture because of a couple of hiccups that took place 8 years ago.

What happens in other countries is up to them. And they were hardly hiccups.
Televoting only works if the public can trust the result is fair. It was proven that SMS votes can and will be delayed meaning votes won't be counted, even when sent within the allocated timeframe. That destroys public trust in the process and in turn the result and the entire competition. You could describe that as a weird fear culture, but it's certainly not one which started or finished 8 years ago.

I just think it makes us look really backward as a country when the voiting methods are introduced by the presenters and then Scott or Graham have to then do a completely different patter all over it; although in Graham's defence he does apologise for talking over English presentation segments.
