AIUI there are various feeds available via the EBU from the host broadcaster, but most will take an HD feed, clean of commentary but with the Country identifier DOG (saying who's performing, usually bottom left) and clean straps with the song number and a big gap for the broadcasters to insert their own phone number, sms number, cost details etc. This feed is a complete programme, starting at 1900gmt/utc with the Eurovision Logo and ending whenever it ends (again with the Eurovision logo.)

This feed contains several (three?) opt points of fixed lengths for broadcasters who wish to insert commercial breaks, but those breaks are filled by the host broadcaster, often with green room, for broadcasters who don't show commercials during programmes. At the host country, most broadcasters send commentators, some more than one, for different languages, TV and radio etc. Those signals are fed back to the broadcasters via isdn or quality VoIP links. In the host countries themselves, there is another gallery which mixes the commentary with the clean contest feed and adds locally relevant captions. This may be a TV gallery, or might all be done in the presentation gallery/mcr where the ads are also inserted. It depends on the complexity of what needs to be done and the facilities (and budget) the broadcaster has at their disposal.

There may be some broadcasters who send a small video production team and presenters to the contest and provide their own filler material during commercial breaks (like the bbc does for bbc three semi finals). This is fed back to the broadcasting country by a separate satellite link and mixed into the local feed.

I'm not fully across what happens with the voting contributions where spokespersons from each country call in their results. I imagine there are several links to the host broadcaster which are switched in sequence between each participating EBU country... I'd have thought there would be backup phone links just in case, but can't recall one ever being used since I'm vision voting began in the mid 90s.

Some info here about how the voting contributions were done in Birmingham in analogue days

A good Twitter account to follow is that of Gregor Barcal, the Creative Producer of this year's contest. It has loads of photos etc of the stage build.

Stage is up.

I'm really not sure about it. Still think it's too austere.

That looks tiny compared to what we've had the past few years...

I think that's even smaller than the X Factor sets. And not a lot to it. The stage in Copenhagen was fairly basic, but it was very versatile.

I suppose we have to bear in mind it's being made for television primarily, and not for an arena audience like your average concert is.

I've seen a few ORF productions, it seems that they are going 'to type' and concentrating on the performers and presenters. I'm expecting more close-ups rather than expansive arena and stage shots this time around.

They'll have to do a LOT of close ups and then dim the audience, otherwise it's going to look like a village hall compared to recent productions!

Probably not dissimilar to Malmo in size. The stage was pretty small and basic there too. Though Malmo had the secondary smaller stage as well which gave some versatility, together with the bridge that was used for the openings.

Don't know if it helps to give a sense of scale, but by my reckoning the workers in the foreground would look something like this if they were on the stage:

That's only if the edges of the flooring at left and right are truly parallel, and there's a lot of leeway.

Do we know yet if there's going to be a live orchestra this year? The space in front of that stage looks perfect for it. A number of participating countries had live orchestras in their selection shows leading to some speculation that Vienna was planning to have one.
