Given the amount of EBU conferences that the BBC host in London, I very much doubt there is any bad blood. The opposite if anything

Yep - the BBC are major contributors to the EBU in terms of technical development, news gathering etc. There is no bad blood.

As I say thanks for the clarification and it goes to prove you shouldn't listen to everything you hear in Eurovision fan circles!

The montages included in the broadcast last night differed slightly from what was shown at the recording. From memory the BBC One version definitely included more British acts though.

Anyway, a fantastic production. Onwards and upwards to Vienna and the Grand Prix proper! No one calls it the Grand Prix since Sir Terry departed!!

It was a good show but I agree it was a little hardcore. I wouldn't expect the average viewer to remember Bobbysocks for example. Let It Swing is IMO Shlager done to perfection, I love it, but I'm probably the only person outside of The Westcountry Region who does!

They could have possibly done packages interviewing some members of ABBA, or Celine Dion. It just seemed odd they kind of only gave passing mention to the contest's two biggest success stories, although we did get Waterloo sang at the end!

Realistically, I was surprised by the omissions of Alexander Rybak and Lena. The other artist I'd have liked to see is Naimh Kavanagh who won for Ireland in Millstreet at the height of their incredible run in the 90s.

The runaway success of Ireland in the late 80s and early 90s was, many think, largely down to the fact that they could sing in English as the language rules still applied (1977-1999). In many of those years, the UK came 2nd (88, 89, 92 & 93) That's not of course to say that non-English language songs didn't win, but I think it's a reasonable generalisation to say that singing in English did give Ireland, UK and (From 1991 onwards) Malta an advantage.

I guess this show isn't airing in France, as the quip at the start about it being great that they don't have to translate everything into french wouldn't go down very well.

Eurovision In Concert on Saturday then... does anyone know if this is streamed online anywhere?

Just a guess but judging by the clips from last year's concert it's a pretty small video production, so is it something that's shot by four-five cameras on the night and then edited for YouTube?

Incidentally, it was announced today that Ronnie Carroll who represented the UK twice in the early sixties, has died aged 80. He was due to stand in this year's general election. He came fourth in 1962 and 1963 and went on to have two further top 10 hit records.

Eurovision 1963 was an interesting one, staged at BBC Television Centre, it used two studios, TC 3 and 4, with the audience, host and scoreboard in one and the performers and orchestra in the other. They also used a boom mic, leading to complaints from the audience that the singers were miming, as they were so used to seeing enormous microphones in shot. However using a boom meant the performers could move around and (shock) dance (to an extent).

That's the 3rd big Eurovision death this year, we've already lost Ugo Jürgens and Jorgen Ingmann! Sad time.....
