I don't think he did....
It sounded very ad-libby...
Did Eric say it in rehearsal? If he did then maybe someone on the BBC team made the decision to cut the sound in the final, he did start with 'hashtag' which is a big indication of what was to come next.

The thing that bothered me with the bit they opt-outed of was the way in which they did it. Why couldn't they have made the VT slightly longer and played it from the sting. They could have had a pre-recorded shot of Norton in the commentary box or his voice over a view of the venue. Instead of having Norton talking over Petra's intro.
Well, I doubt he he made it up as he was going along, it's not the sort of thing you do when you're doing a live broadcast to hundreds of millions of people. Unless he was filling for time of course.

Eric!
After watching that, it does seem like that that comment did throw her off her stride. I wonder if honestly she didn't know that was coming....

Yes, I think that's the most plausible theory, as there wasn't much of a delay to the broadcast.

Did Linda Martin mind or say anything, IMO it was a joke, not really controversial.

There's a minor controversy in Ireland after Petra jokingly suggested that Linda Martin (1992 winner, who was present in the arena) was Johnny Logan in drag. If anything, I think it was self-deprecating on Petra's part.

It wasn't the comment that through her off, it was whatever was being said by the gallery in her ear. As soon as she said they were going to Bulgaria they went to a top 3 recap instead so there was clearly some miscommunication happening.
