.... as for the new symbol, works well with ANY content, which I believe to be the driver for replacing the flying iteration used over the past few years. It worked remarkably well with the New Years Day concert for example.

I believe I might have read that the changing colour saturation and hue is a technical test and reference device built into the ident as well. If so it's well implemented and anonymous to the casual viewer.

Really disappointed with the set this year (I fear I may be in the minority with that), it just all felt small and dated, although the EVS slomo into the postcards was nice the constant use of special effects felt incredibly dated and misjudged as did the monochrome effect used for one of the acts. The camera work and lighting as always was exceptional. Despite my misgivings it was still a slick and mostly polished production. Lynda Woodruff was great, but Petra Mede needed a co-host.

The BBC Three offering as usual was poor but felt worse this year because of Ana who really didn't bring much to the party. The graphics were poor and generally the whole production detracted from the main show as it often does.

In summary I know and understand the reasons behind the smaller venue and staging but it looked very dated IMHO.

That new Eurovision opening sting is really lacklustre. I don't like how the bits surrounding the "O" are off-centre. What's with that?

Gotta disagree Razz

As other people have mentioned on here I don't think that SVT would have necessarily gone for such a small set, but the EBU pretty much forced them into it, perhaps understandably. I actually thought that it looked a lot bigger on screen and the lighting and camera angles flattered it a lot. I think Petra Mede was pretty good on her own- professional and competent enough to carry the show, with just the right amount of humour. A vast improvement on last years hosts, who I thought were pretty soulless.

BBC Three still felt a little disorganised, but seemed to run a lot better than the last couple of years- and Ana at least knew her facts about the artists etc. which is more than can be said for Cox Shocked The balance between humour and being informative was a lot better.

Fair enough, I thought I'd be in the minority that wasn't a fan. SVT did indeed do a slick job and as mentioned I understand the reasons behind the staging etc, I think what bothered me the most was the 1990's DVE effects that seemed to be overused. Again I'm pretty certain I'm almost alone in this but I loved the 2011 show in Düsseldorf; it had such a wow factor.

As for BBC Three I would just like an option to watch an HD feed of the show without all the Scott Mills et al typical BBC naff VT's and presentation.

We're in agreement on the 2011 stage- a lot of people disliked it, but I thought it gave a fantastic sense of scale to the whole show.

I sometimes watch live on the official website- it's the clean international feed, so you get the whole show uninterrupted and without commentary. Whilst it's not HD, the quality is usually pretty good if you've got a decent internet connection.

Well whilst we await the ten qualifiers, here are my preferences based solely on all of tonight's performances:
Definitely want to qualify: San Marino, Azerbaijan, Malta, Iceland, Israel, Georgia, Switzerland.
Wouldn't mind qualifying: Bulgaria, Armenia, Hungary
Prefer not to qualify: Latvia, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Finland, Norway, Albania, Romania.
Definitely don't want to qualify: Greece

So these are the ones I want to see Saturday night: San Marino, Azerbaijan, Malta, Iceland, Israel, Georgia, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Armenia, Hungary.

Had the UK been voting in this semi-final, I would have voted for San Marino, Iceland and Israel.

My comments on tonight's live performances are available here on my blog. Please check it out if you're interested.
