Those of you who are interested may want to check out this blog:
http://www.m-m-pr.com/index.php/esc-diary-2013
It's updated daily showing the progress of the preparations of the contest (mostly focussing on the technical side of things), it's been done for a few contests in the past and is usually a really interesting read. Plus it's great to see how the stage is being constructed over the next few weeks!

Yes. The EBU instructed SVT to downsize the event (they could have held it in the much larger "Friends Arena" in Stockholm where they held the final of Melodifestivalen) hence the smaller venue and stage. There was a feeling that Moscow and Baku - and other contests in recent years - had allowed the event to become too big and thus too expensive for many countries to host should they win. Particularly in the current economic situation. I think Oslo showed the way in hosting a more modest contest - but still with very effective staging. It's probably not a coincidence that NRK's Jon Ola Sand, who was Exec Prod of the contest in Oslo, is now the Eurovision's Exec Prod (taking over from SVT's Svante Stockselius)
Ola Melzig, who is blogging as usual about the contest (and has a different job this year), mentioned there was a 'pixel ban' which means they are going for high-power projection (Christies I think - **EDIT - no Barcos **) rather than LED screen - to increase the resolution of the video elements. (** EDIT - others have already posted a link to Ola's blog **)
SVT have used high-power projection on MF in recent years (memorably on Charlotte Pirelli's "The Girl") so it will be interesting to see how it goes. Suspect there will be a lot of Pyros - the Finns are there again!

SVT were the first to break the mode and upscale the event in 2000.

At various points, Ola has referred to the army of Barco projectors they have this year.

Yep - and times have changed - so they're aiming to change the mould again. Not break it maybe - but move the contest in a different direction - but it's not SVT who are the driving force for this. It's definitely the EBU.

NB ....
Lack of availability of the big Stockholm venues this May, owing to prior bookings, has somewhat accelerated the downsizing too.

Yes - and question marks over accommodation available there linked to the events taking place already.
However the downsizing is coming from the EBU no question. Am still expecting an amazing spectacle - and some humour. Really looking forward to the presentation this year. Petra is going to be great I'm sure, and looking at the people who are involved in the interval acts they should be great too.

Mmmn given how big Eurovision is in Sweden, I'd bet if SvT want an bigger arena they would have it!
This is an EBU issue!

Yeah Eurovision is absolutely mega in Sweden, so I would imagine SVT would have definitely thrown money at it to put on a huge spectacle.
I do wonder why the EBU wanted it downsized though?

......... to make staging it in less affluent countries, without mega venues and large accommodation resources possible.
