This is just an out-there suggestion, but couldn't the BBC just continue broadcasting it, getting all of this "cheap" footage and high viewing figures, without fielding a contestant and getting the annual whats-the-point, political commentary? It might be more enjoyable if we just watched, laughed and didn't keep losing.

If we weren't competing, we wouldn't be able to vote... Not sure it would work as well as purely a spectator show...

Well that's fine for you to say if you work at the BBC.
Not all of us have international satellite channels piped into our homes.

Also, Graham "explained" about the jury voting whilst the hosts were explaining it in English too. He talks over more than just SMS mentions.

Also, what is the point in the red button 'lyrics' service, when the lyrics are carried on the subtitles track anyway? How is replicating what is already available a good use of money - especially when using the DVB subtitles are preferable anyway because they take up about a quarter of the space that the enormous 'red button' lyrics did!?

My favourite part of tonights show has to be Lynda Woodruff's appearance announcing the Swedish votes (plus it's good that they won too - should be a gooden' next year!)

For anyone who hasn't seen Lynda Woodruff's original appearance in Melodifestivalen, here it is:

Great wasn't she? Love Lynda Woodruff!

It's not impossible to arrange, relatively easy to erect a dish, and connect to proper satellite receiver, then of course it's also not totally impossible to watch some foreign broadcasts via the internet.

A friend of mine has a Swedish wife, they live in Woking, and they (well, his wife at least Wink ) were watching the ESC on SVT via the web last night.

I'm not erecting a satellite dish (which I wouldn't be allowed in my apartment anyway) solely so I can watch the Eurovision Song Contest without xenophobic commentary. If the BBC want to offer egregious red button services with the ESC, they could put the show + Graham Norton on red button in SD and leave the HD feed clean.

Nothing to do with working for the BBC - and if you think the BBC provide domestic viewing kit for foreign channels (or UK channels) you're living in the wrong century...

Webstreaming and/or a cheap multi-satellite system is all you need. Getting German, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish PSBs is relatively straightforward...

I watched the semifinals in a budget B&B on http://svt.se/play (with an HDMI cable from my laptop into the telly of course) as the BBC Three show was just too annoying to watch...

At least 5 alternative ways to view Eurovision were available without using a satellite dish of any kind. These are just the ones I knew about. I'm sure there were more.

SVT - online (Sweden)
RTE - online (Ireland)
ERT World - Freeview HD IPTV (Greece)
RIK Sat - Freeview HD IPTV (Cyprus)
eurovision.tv - online

Can I also point out that the BBC rejected both PIXIE LOTT and DIANA VICKERS for Eurovision this year, both artists that have had number 1 singles in the last two years.

The people in charge of Eurovision at the BBC all need replacing.

I meant more that you could watch it in the broadcast centre or something.

Err - I watched the semi-finals in a cheap B&B and the final on my sofa...

Would ITV be allowed to show the contest, since they are an EBU member, or would they have to pay? I'd love them to show it against the BBC next year, without any commentary, it'd be interesting to see how many people would turn Norton off.

I have a feeling that unless a local agreement were reached (Pro7 and ARD have one in Germany I believe) that wouldn't be possible.

And why would ITV do that? Whilst some die-hard Eurovision fans might not like Graham - most people seem pretty happy with him. For my money he's a lot better than Terry was during the last year or two he commentated.

Virtually nobody, so they'd never do it. Complaining about the commentary is the sort of thing that people do on forums such as this, whilst the vast majority of the public just put up with it because its not enough to spoil their enjoyment of the show and / or they're having a party and aren't listening that closely.

Couldn't see much wrong with Norton's commentary myself- could have done without the mentions of all the people watching who were having parties etc, but it wasn't that bad. I was more concerned that his commentary ISDN was far enough ahead of the contest feed that he 'spoiled' a bit of the voting before the results had appeared. That and the fact that the ISDN glitched a few times - but that was more me having been on both the studio and OB ends of glitching ISDNs and being worried they're about to drop Very Happy
