This is just an out-there suggestion, but couldn't the BBC just continue broadcasting it, getting all of this "cheap" footage and high viewing figures, without fielding a contestant and getting the annual whats-the-point, political commentary? It might be more enjoyable if we just watched, laughed and didn't keep losing.

I think this some up the problem the UK HAS

From the BBC website:
Quote:
I have met quite a few people from Europe and we do talk about this contest. They said it is nothing to do with us going to war, nothing to do with us coming across as arrogant.

They don't vote for us because we are the best music nation on the planet who refuses to send it's best music talent. If we aren't serious... why should they be?

its true, last night song was not good enough for the contest, I actually like the Russian song, 80 granny song and dancing good on them.

Or the BBC could just try a bit harder to get a contemporary artist and decent, memorable song. The ratings wouldn't be anywhere near as high if we weren't actually taking part. The voting's the most exciting bit (when we're getting a few points of course).

One thing I noticed last night was that there wasn't a clock on screen during the voting and Graham said it would last "approximately" 15 minutes. Once the voting recaps were done they went straight to the 10 second countdown. Presumably this was all done so they didn't have that awkward moment where they're trying to hear from the producers how many seconds are left and desperately try to fill the time with a bit of meaningless chatter. Not sure if they've done this over the last two years when they had the lines open from the start.

As I keep saying it's time for the BBC to re-vision it's attitide, if by taking it seriously it means ditiching Graham et al and losing 25-30pct of the viewers in the proicess I think it'd be a much better proposition.

Who would you have host the event? After tonight I'd much prefer Ken Bruce or Paddy O'Connell.

I think linking The Voice to Eurovision would be incredibly damaging for the Voice.

Actually it's probably the other way round now considering The Voice is now rating lower than what Fame Academy and So you think you can Dance did in their first seasons.

The BBC are committed to The Voice next year so I don't think they'll put too much focus on Eurovision - it'll either be another selected entry (better you would hope) or a one-off selection show, but come 2014 they might look to do something bigger again similar to the ALW series to fill a few hours in the winter at a much lower cost than The Voice.

Losing is all part of the appeal though. The contest itself probably isn't strong enough to hold the viewing figures without some kind of national interest.

Really Eurovision is no different from football where England go into a tournament with inflated expectations only to crash and burn sooner rather than later. To everyone else it's obvious they didn't stand a chance of winning, but they'll still be that hope and expectation and then the post-mortem - and it's all part of the show.

He wasn't following the scoring.

He missed chances to give easy background information on those giving the voting for Sweden and Finland, the choices of which may have left some baffled.

I'm sorry, that's such a ridiculous thing to say. There's a difference between it not being spoiled for you if you do lose; but only sadists would find it an appealing idea.

Even I, on some level, was pleased that we neither had dead-last place nor stayed on the one point we got early on. Beyond that its all a bit abstract.

.... and that is what is wrong with the BBC presentation AND the perception of the British audiences. Europe takes the ESC SERIOUSLY as we should too. Sending a jjoke master and two completely out of touch DJ's to lead the TV coverage is a disgrace to the programme and it's history.
