The general rule of entries in order to get a winner is to stand out from the competition. In 2010, there was a huge amount of ballads, as a result some really great songs (like Sweden's "This Is My Life") didn't progress from the semis because of ballad fatigue. Germany won with an upbeat song.

Yep - though I don't agree with you about "This is My Life" - a sweet song, but far too lagom for Eurovision. (Popular in Sweden - but not really a song with wider appeal IMHO).

Sweden would have been far better to have sent Eric Saade a year early, or Ola with Unstoppable (which is still annoyingly catchy and very well produced).

Similarly they should have sent either of the Måns Zelmerlöw entries in previous years (Hope and Glory was better than Cara Mia I think - but both were pretty good), and whilst I think Eric was the right choice this year, I'd have been interested to see how Sanne Nielsen faired - because her performances are almost universally faultless, and her staging would really have suited the Düsseldorf set.

Reacting to this, the vast majority of entries were up tempo this year! Thus we got a number of ballads through to the final that didn't really cut the mustard (Switzerland for example) - essentially 'up tempo song fatigue' in the semis.

The big mistake that the BBC could make would be submit a ballad next year because a slow tempo song winning in 2011 - it will most probably be a ballad-y year next year.

To a degree.

If I'm honest I just didn't think many of the songs this year were that good.

No real decent pedal-to-the-metal dancefloor fillers. (Hera Bjorks "Je ne s'ais quo" last year for instance didn't really have a rival this year)

BTW - anyone heard the rumblings about a "gay boycott" of ESC 2012 as a result of Azerbaijan's less-than-enlightened attitude to homosexuality and gay rights?

Given Eurovision's natural constituency - could be an interesting contest...

Maybe sending Eric Saade a year early with Popular would have been good....but to send him with 'Manboy' would have been, well, interesting. Popular wipes the floor with it!

2010 was certainly a classic year! I thought Hera Bjork was going to do better than 19th place. I originally thought Hungary's entry was this year's equivalent, but it didn't turn out to be the dance floor filler I was hoping for!

Switzerland was a good song (except some of the bits near the end), the UK gave them 10 points. I don't think it should have come last in the final.

I agree - LOVED Switzerland. Did not deserve to come last.

That's all the BBC's possible TV commentators out.

Well as shown on More4's "Secret History of Eurovision" it wouldn't be the first time, and it won't be the last. I'm sure either way they'll find a way of representing their backgrounds at the event.

Is Azerbaijan's attitude to gay people any worse than Russia's?

Sadly - yes, I think it is.

A relief ... the contest reverts to voting after the last song from 2012, the open window has been closed. As many of you will know I hated that idea when it was introduced.

Yes, that will be a lot more fair.

And now they won't have a quarter screen sized graphic (actually more like a 3rd of the screen in height if you take the bit with the country name into account) on screen while they're doing their performance (for nearly 25 seconds - nearly 14% of the time allowed for a song) instead of just towards the end of the contest. And if you watch the DVD/Blu-ray the big box will be empty apart from the running order number and the country - which was already shown throughout the song anyway - except the flag.

Yep - that will be what the host provided to all the rights holders so that they could animate on their own phone (and in many countries other than the UK - SMS) numbers and cost details to align with the host provided suffix artist number. (Or blanked for your own country's song)
