I guess they thought Paddy O'Connell wasn't very 'BBC Three' anymore and not high profile enough to take on the contest full time. Also I suspect including someone like Mills would guarantee coverage on his Radio 1 show.
Yep - Paddy did a great job on the semi-finals when they started in 2004. In 2003/4/5 Paddy was a main BBC Three face (Celebdaq, Liquid News, BBC Three News - as well as the BBC Three Eurovision shows) so an obvious choice. He was also very, very good at it... .
Paddy brought a natural sarcasm to it. Mills tries too hard to "be funny" it's embarrassing.
Paddy O'Connell is out there for eurovision as well. He did a section on Jeremy Vine the other day. Vine said that Paddy was doing commentary for BBC World. Was he meaning BBC World News, or is there another global commentary the BBC puts out on one of its entertainment channels?
I really thought Paddy O'Connell did a great job when he presented the semis a few years back. He would have been a great Terry replacement too. Not a big fan of Sara Cox as the presenter...never seems to be truly in the picture of what's going on.

I'm thinking they could be under some sort of DDOS attack- the host broadcaster's website is also down and there's been a few other ESC related sites taken offline this week
Is it just me, or has the eurovision.tv site fallen over?

I remember we had the same discussion last year. Can't quite remember the outcome think he's just in a reporting role.
I'm sure Scott Mills was in London last year, so we got was an improvement arguably.

Yep - Scott was in London last year - which was actually a stroke of luck - as the commentary system in Germany failed and lots of other countries had to revert to mobile phones etc...

I think sarcasm implies an archness that Paddy didn't have. I think I prefer 'knowing'. He knew his stuff - but saw the funny side. Gave interesting facts - and didn't crash into the songs. Took the job seriously - but not the event.
Really miss his commentary.
I think BBC Three feel duty bound to have Radio 1 presenters now, as they think that they suit their demographic. However I suspect the audience for the Eurovision semi-finals is a different audience to normal...
I had to stop listening to the BBC Three commentary again - switched to SVT Play for most of it. Much wittier commentary (though their aborted mobile phone conversation with Christer wasn't a magic TV moment...)
Mills tries too hard to "be funny" it's embarrassing.
He just comes across as a bit dim at times... (Yes Scott, we know Serbia have won before... Their winner was in the medley a few minutes earlier...)
Or are Scott and Sara the Mick Fleetwood and Sam Fox for the 2010s...?

I suspect that Graham Norton would be too expensive to send to Eurovision for the whole week, I can't imagine him wanting to either.
BBC3's coverage was a vast improvement tonight. I suspect a lot of that is because they didn't feel the need to cover up all the voting mentions but it just seemed slicker. We got to see the interval act too
