So just me who didn't like the set then?

I only watched the first hour (who scheduled the first episode of Apprentice up against this? And incidentally, how did BBC HD cope with the overrun, as they were supposed to have You're Fired on at Ten?), so maybe it suddenly became better after that, but from what I saw it was effectively a giant LED screen with a massive stage (about 5 miles from the audience) plonked in front of it. There didn't seem to be any elements to make it any more interesting, and with a large number of shots being MCU's from halfway down the arena at the same height as the performers meaning you just get this horrible 2D picture - there's no depth to it at all.

Then there were the problems with lots of shots being at the right distance from the LED wall to cause moire-ing on my TV (it's 720p, so the downscaling could be causing this), which looked bad at best.

I also didn't like the "heart beat" when coming back from the postcards. The lighting never seemed synced to the audio, and I definitely prefer to come back to a nice dark arena before the song starts.

The stage doesn't look that good - it's far too big with that surround, and the walkways up to the back looked like a bit of an after thought. And what was with all the lumps of perspex just chucked on the surround? They looked like they were there to duct the low smoke, but surely they could have dropped them in on the required songs rather than be there all the time?

Finally, who on earth was thinking "oh, we haven't got any movement in this shot, right, lets get the camera to pan a bit then zoom out, then pan back and zoom in, then repeat that until we cut away".

On the other hand, when the LEDs were working, on a decent choice of shot, it looked lovely. As were the tracking shots from high up in the grid. And the arena overall looked nicer than previous years, so it's not all bad.

Definitely hoping for a better show on Thursday!

In terms of technical issues, there were supposed to be three rehearsals of the show for the benefit of the broadcasters but because of technical issues only one took place. Added to that, Germany's timings were off quite a lot of the time. This probably accounts for some of the sloppy junctions on the BBC Three coverage.

BBC HD just started You're Fired at 2212, not much else they could do I guess. Not sure what else there was that night that might have had simulcasts screwed by the overrun.

And putting Scott in London??? Ridiculous idea.
That was the best decision they could have made!

Eurovision Song Contest 2011 Semi-Final 1
The first semi-final is now over. I saw it, did you? Here are my opinions on each of the 19 songs. Watching the live performances last night changed my views a bit from watching the preview videos online the weekend before last.

Unfortunately I didn't have access to the internet so have had to delay posting this until now. Please read the following as though I had posted it between the voting lines closing and announcement of the ten qualifiers.

Song 1: POLAND - Magdalena Tul "Jestem"
Good dance routine, particularly the arm movements. The song itself is questionable, mind you it's difficult to make a fair judgement before hearing any of the others.

Song 2: NORWAY - Stella Mwangi "Haba Haba"
When I saw the preview videos on the ESC website I particularly liked this. From tonight's performance, I'm not so sure. It's a likeable song with a catchy chorus, but the vocals were a bit weak at the start.

Song 3: ALBANIA - Aurela Gaçe "Feel The Passion"
A punchy chorus, but the rest of the song is a bit flat. Nauseating trash really.

Song 4: ARMENIA - Emmy "Boom Boom"
Song generally below par, it has a catchy chorus but the verses are somewhat boring. One to be valued more for the well choreographed dance routine by the four men than the song itself.

Song 5: TURKEY - Yüksek Sadakat "Live It Up"
A punchy song, but not my cup of tea. I'd rather this didn't qualify, but no doubt it's bound to.

Song 6: SERBIA - Nina "Èaroban"
Better than Turkey IMO, but I'm still not sure it merits qualification for Saturday's final.

Song 7: RUSSIA - Alexej Vorobjov "Get You"
I particularly like the well co-ordinated arm and leg movements, which I'll enjoy copying if this goes through to Saturday's final. The song itself isn't up to much though. Another one to be valued more for the dance routine than the song.

Song 8: SWITZERLAND - Anna Rossinelli "In Love For A While"
One of the better songs so far, if not the best so far. This ought to qualify.

Song 9: GEORGIA - Eldrine "One More Day"
What a load of nauseating trash! Is the rap really necessary? Rap never does well in Eurovision. Stay out of Saturday's final!

Song 10: FINLAND - Paradise Oskar "Da Da Dam"
A beautiful well-sung ballad. However the "save the planet" theme makes it a protest song, and protest songs tend to flop in Eurovision. It ought to go through to Saturday night though.

Song 11: MALTA - Glen Vella "One Life"
A good beat, I particularly liked the two blokes with their arm and leg movements in sync with the beat, but the song itself is below par. It's probably best if this stays out of the final.

Song 12: SAN MARINO - Senit "Stand By"
A gentle female vocal ballad. One of my preferred qualifiers among the preview videos, but not so sure now.

Song 13: CROATIA - Daria "Celebrate"
A reasonably OK song with a catchy chorus. Liked the way the lead singer walked around the arena. Deserves to qualify, but not sure it's a winner.

Song 14: ICELAND - Sjonni's Friends "Coming Home"
A gentle group ballad with a catchy chorus. I'd say it's borderline whether or not this should qualify for Saturday night.

Song 15: HUNGARY - Kati Wolf "What About My Dreams?"
A reasonable song with a catchy chorus. A good dance routine, especially the person flipping over. Ought to qualify.

Song 16: PORTUGAL - Homens Da Luta "Luta É Alegria"
A catchy, up-beat song. See you Saturday!

Song 17: LITHUANIA - Evelina Sašenko "C'est Ma Vie"
Not particularly impressed with this ballad. The chorus is half catchy, verses are somewhat boring. This was one of my "maybe" qualifiers among the preview videos, but on the basis of tonight's performance I'd rather it stays out of the final.

Song 18: AZERBAIJAN - Ell/Nikki "Running Scared"
Beautiful ballad with flowing arm movements. Deserves to be in the final.

Song 19: GREECE - Loucas Yiorkas feat. Stereo Mike "Watch My Dance"
Excellent chorus, but the verses are less appealing to me. I'd like to see this Saturday night for the super dance routine, as well as the chorus.

Here are my preferences based solely on all of tonight's performances:
Definitely want to qualify: Norway, Switzerland, Finland, Croatia, Hungary, Portugal, Greece
Maybe: Poland, Albania, Russia, Iceland, Azerbaijan.
Prefer not to qualify: Armenia, Turkey, Serbia, Malta, San Marino
Definitely don't want to qualify: Georgia, Lithuania

So these are the ones I want to see Saturday night:
Norway, Switzerland, Finland, Croatia, Hungary, Portugal, Greece; plus three out of Poland, Albania, Russia, Iceland, Azerbaijan.

Out of these, I voted for Finland. I was tempted to vote for Portugal and Greece as well, but didn't want to spend too much on voting from my mobile.

Eurovision Song Contest 2011 Semi-Final 1 Results

My desired qualifiers: Norway, Switzerland, Finland, Croatia, Hungary, Portugal, Greece ; plus three out of Poland, Albania, Russia, Iceland, Azerbaijan.

Actual qualifiers: Serbia, Lithuania, Greece, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Switzerland, Hungary, Finland, Russia, Iceland.

Bold entries represent the actual qualifiers that match my preferences.

OUT: Poland, Norway, Albania, Armenia, Turkey, Malta, San Marino, Croatia, Portugal.

I am GUTTED that Croatia and Portugal failed to qualify, as I thought they were two of the best songs of the night. Furthermore I'm DISGUSTED that Georgia qualified for the final as their song is a load of nauseating trash with unnecessary rap. In addition I didn't like its lighting effects, I'll probably have to shut my eyes during its performance Saturday night. I'm also shocked that Lithuania qualified as it's rather boring really. Ideally Croatia and Portugal deserved the places unfairly taken Georgia and Lithuania. Even Turkey (which I preferred not to qualify) was better than Georgia; at a push I'd have been happier if Turkey had qualified and Georgia had stayed out.

I'm so glad that Finland qualified after I voted for it, it's a beautiful ballad that deserves to be in the final. Likewise I'm glad Switzerland, Hungary and Greece all qualified for Saturday night. I'm particularly looking forward to joining in with the dance routine for the Greek entry Saturday night. So that means four out of my desired seven most wanted countries (Finland, Switzerland, Hungary and Greece) made it to the final, not bad going really. Also I got what I wanted from my "maybe" group, three countries (Russia, Iceland and Azerbaijan) went through. I'm glad Armenia, Turkey, Malta and San Marino are all out as I felt they didn't deserve to qualify, although as already said, if we had to have a bad song qualify, I'd sooner Turkey had taken Georgia's place (and Georgia had stayed out).

So how will the ten qualifiers fare Saturday night? Remember they'll be up against the ten qualifiers from tomorrow night's second semi-final (the actual ten will inevitably make a difference) plus the Big Five who qualified directly.

For the benefit of many, could you further explain how some rap is "uneccessary", and indeed where it would be considered "necessary"?

I thank you.

Croatia and Portugal were bloody awful. I wouldn't be surprised if Portugal scored 0, a truly repulsive song and performance.

Massive audio issues on RTE last night. No commentary for the first 10 minutes, then Marty's voice began to be heard over a phone line. Throughout the night the audio continued to switch from a clear feed back to phone. It was a tad off putting. Not sure where the fault was, with RTE or out in Germany. RTE did place up many straps making apologies for it. It better not happen tomorrow for our all important round.

Reuters are reporting this ...

The organisers of this year's Eurovision Song
Contest apologised on Wednesday (May 11) for technical
problems at Tuesday's (May 10) first semi-final, but said
that they did not affect the music or the voting.
"It varied. It was short interruptions in some
countries and in others countries it was in intervals
coming up. The problem also was that you are a commentator
sitting in your booth. There is the song and for three
minutes everything is fine. The music and the show and
hosts were not affected. We are only talking about the
commentators," Thomas Schreiber, head of the team from host
broadcaster ARD told journalists in the German city of
Duesseldorf.
A technical fault on the ground reportedly led to
numerous commentators having to resort to using their
mobile phones to talk European audiences through the
competition.
But Schreiber pointed out that the main problems
occurred during the so-called "postcards", the intervals
between entries' performances.
Ten countries qualified on Tuesday for the Eurovision
Grand final which is taking place on Saturday (May 14).

Well last year none of the qualifiers won - Germany is one of the Big 5. So they really need to be a good act to have any chance.

I noticed the same on my 1080p TV, it was particularly bad during Serbia's performance.
Personally, I don't see the attraction of the screens, they create a very flat, claustrophobic feeling during mid shots, or at least when used as below.
