Coxy will be doing the commentary and Mills the backstage reporting. This sounds miles better than ever before.

I hadn't noticed that, surely the wrong way round? I think Mills is perfect for the commentary, I can't see Cox being much good

It's a bit confusing in the release at http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2011/04_april/21/eurovision.shtml:

Quote:
Sara will provide commentary live from Dusseldorf on the nights of the semi finals, and also present interviews and reports from the arena. Scott will be filming behind the scenes in the build up to the competition before commentating live on the nights from London.

Sounds like they'll both be commentating - but in two locations (perhaps as Scott will also be on air those evenings).

Perhaps this means Scott will be giving the voting results again.

Unless there is a change in format, there are no votes given in the semi finals - just the opening of envelopes. But would expect him to give votes on the Saturday

He means the voting in the final on the Saturday night like he did last year.

Radio 1's Big Weekend is that weekend, will he not be involved in that?

That's what I meant, but it does suggest he will doing something for the semi-finals. I really hope they don't send him to some random "Eurovision party" to report live, unless, perhaps, he'll be with Blue for their reaction as they check out their competition.

Sounds to me as if Scott and Sara will co-commentate (from the same location - be very difficult to do slick commentary split between two locations). Sara will be in-vision, and Scott will have pre-shot VTs to play-in?

So effectively Scott has replaced Paddy's role - and I suspect he'll be the lead commentator, so that Sara can leg-it to the in-vision position (often provided by the EBU)

They'll be in Dusseldorf not London though.

But it says in the press release that they will definitely be commentating from two different locations.

Depends when they fly out there. Will they be there during the semi-finals?

They would have started rehearsing just before the semis so yes. I can't really see them going back between the 8th and 13th just to speak to Scott in London when they could be doing more promotion in Germany.

Yes.

The semi-finals are on Tuesday and Thursday aren't they, with the final on Saturday, which would only leave Friday for rehearsals for the main show and the Big Five country performances if there were no Big Five rehearsals before this.

Given that there is usually a full dress rehearsal on Friday (I believe?) - they would need to have rehearsed the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy - as well as the other bits of the final (interval, voting, opening etc.) before the Friday surely?

Don't most countries do a couple of rehearsals on separate days - so they can feedback to the host broadcaster, and the host broadcaster can refine their coverage of each act. (They don't just do three rehearsals back-to-back on the same day etc.)

Those are incredible photographs of the set being assembled. Thanks for posting those. I had no idea the whole thing was so mammothly large. I am guessing it's probably the world's largest annual studio-based live television event, ha?
