However I don't think the EBU separately uplink a graphics-free version of the contest (I'm about 99.9% sure they don't) so the BBC wouldn't have access to an entirely clean feed on-the-night.

Yes, I don't really see why it would be needed on the night and there's probably enough technical complexity in terms of lines and different versions without having the luxury of a clean version too.

2- Nice work by the researchers to get the Sandy Shaw 'Puppet on a string' start - the original as broadcast didn't have her mic faded up for the first couple of seconds.

Haven't watched the doc yet - did they make a big thing about unearthing the start? Or was this a recording of a rehearsal (or worse - different audio relaid on top to 'fix' the fault because the people making the show were unaware of the original issue and may have thought it was drop-out?) [/quote]
Being the winner, wouldn't she have performed it twice on the night? If so surely the audio isn't missing on both?

I had to laugh when Graham said that most of Spain and South America were watching the Spanish NF! Presumably one of the researchers saw that TVE have an international service?

And barely anyone in Spain actually watched it anyway!

Yup, that's the case.

Yup that they do uplink a clean version, or yup that they don't?!

I've never seen a clean version without graphics- even the feed on the Eurovision website (which has no commentary/elements unique to a particular broadcaster) which I assume is the same as the main feed still contains blank spaces for phone numbers/country DOGs etc.

I'm sure if a totally clean feed did exist then they would use that on the DVD so they wouldn't have the blank phone number recaps coming up during the interval act (and any other bits that look a bit weird when not live). But as the DVD is as broadcast I think it is safe to assume that the show only ever exists with graphics 'burnt' on.

The clip was the winners reprise. Tighter shot on Sandie, no caption on the first 5 secons of the song, and of course, full vocal.

I think we're confusing 'feeds' with 'recordings'.

I don't think there is much doubt that all the live feeds leaving the site for broadcast/streaming etc. have the burned in country numbers.

The wider question is whether these days the show is vision mixed and recorded such that a recording exists on-site of the show without graphics burned in. My gut feeling is that it may do in recent years - though whether this is only to EVS (and never copied to tape after or recorded to tape as well) is another question.

The DVD/Blu-ray release is probably a red herring - you'd kind of expect that to have burned in graphics as it is a representation of the contest. I quite like seeing the country singing (and their voting suffix) burned in when re-watching the contest...

Ahem. Sorry. The only version on satellite comes with burnt-in graphics; there's no clean version.
(They take up enough satellite space with the SD and HD feeds, and the voting channels - uplinking it clean too would need yet more bandwidth.)

So, by the looks of it, they're doing an Oslo (and Riga) and sticking the Green Room on top of the seating behind the stage. Design doesn't change that much nowadays, does it?
