Gutted that Paddy isn't doing do the SFs - though I suspect his links with BBC Three and BBC Entertainment have now pretty much disappeared.

His commentaries were always great - taking the show a bit more seriously, but still being pretty witty. He felt much more of a fan watching with us.

If the semi-finals aren't on BBC HD this year I'll be watching SVT1 HD...

I hope she's not doing them on her own... She was OK with Paddy - but it definitely felt like he was driving the commentary, with Sarah chipping in.

Be interesting to see if they bother with the in-vision stuff on BBC Three - the first year or so it was pretty good - but I'm not really convinced it has been worth it more recently. Last year did we see Paddy much at all in-vision - it felt like it was mostly Sarah?

Source? Her Twitter says otherwise.

This came from BBC Eurovision's Twitter on 10th Feb "@justan00b Don't know the format of the BBC Three shows yet Nick. You'd prefer to see the interval acts, I take it?" So you never know, they might get rid of the in vision stuff. I hope so anyway. I'd much rather see them replace it with an extra show after Eastenders with all the stuff they'd usually have during the interval act as well as live coverage of the press conference with the final running orders but I think that's asking too much! Laughing

One think I don't understand is why they broadcast the two voting recaps during the semi we can't vote in but don't show the interval act. Can't they replace the useless voting recaps instead? Or at least one?

Was Paddy not in vision right at the very beginning in the minute before the show began or was that just Sarah?

I wonder if they'll just treat them like the final - Graham doing commentary (though he might be too expensive?) and possibly nothing in-vision?

Whilst the live in-vision stuff is pretty cheap to do - there are bookable EBU live facilities, and the BBC have to route the main multilateral through a gallery in London to mix in the commentary, add the voting graphics, and mask the sponsorship stuff (though there is more production staffing and they have, in the past, shot some VTs) - there is presumably a saving by ditching it.

A couple of years ago - when Sarah was on a sofa - the lighting, camera work etc. was dire and it didn't really add any value at all...

I think you're right - Paddy has appeared in-vision at the beginning most (all?) years - but at one point he was far more a co-presenter, rather than latterly where he was commentator and Sarah was presenter (and co-commentator)

2005 was the last time BBC Three did a proper after-show programme - from backstage and a tent outside the venue - and 2004 was the last time BBC Three really went big on it (with a series of programmes in the run-up)

Opting out of the interval stuff and ad-breaks is good some years (when the interval stuff has been dire) - but it was a shame last year, as NRK really worked hard on them and they were nicely produced little sequences.

I think the whole point in a different commentator doing the semis is so that the final commentator isn't using up their best material before the most important night. Surely they wouldn't have to pay Graham any more money since he's got a golden handcuffs deal?

That was utterly brilliant television! The stage doors getting jammed, the drunken woman requesting some news reporter to play old Eurovision songs on the keyboard, Eurovision acts who didn't have a clue what was happening, security in the background holding back rowdy Ukrainians, oh it was great.

Gold Handcuff deals don't quite work like that...

Julia Morris wasn't drunk - that was just her style. Glam - the lead singer from Norway's Glam Rock entry Wig Wam - he was definitely drunk...

The door sticking was priceless...

BTW - not sure if it was in this thread, but there was some discussion last year as to whether NRK's Eurovision Song Contest was shot 720p or 1080i - as NRK broadcasts (like SVT and ARD/ZDF) in 720p domestically. I wasn't sure - but others were confident that it was shot 720p.

Well strangely enough it transpires that although NRK's terrestrial HD stuff is 720p, they don't actually run their HD production systems internally at 720p. They run 1080i and cross-convert for transmission... I guess this has some advantages for their main HD sources - which are international events which are mainly 1080i, as well as for imported shows which are likely to be delivered as 1080p or 1080i masters?

So I'd have expected the NRK HD1 and HD2 trucks that were providing the main OB facilities for the contest to have been running 1080i (and thus BBC HD shown it in the original format and not a 720p-1080i cross-conversion)

Thus any future BD release of Oslo 2010 (unlikely I suspect) would be 1080i if native.

(I have only one 720p native Blu-ray I think - an SVT mini-series 'The Half Hidden')
*EDIT - just looked at two other SVT Blu-ray releases, and they're both 1080i50 - and were in-house productions rather than independents... Looks like they too may be doing more 1080i stuff than I thought...*
