In my opinion though unless Eurovision switched channels any time soon (which hardly looks likely) I can't see the selection process being significantly improved at all in the near future.

They've tried and re-visited so many different formats in recent years they're bound to find a decent format eventually

Apparently they're now back in because they don't want to pay the fine that they would have to pay for withdrawing after the deadline had passed.

Just noted that UK viewers wont be able to vote in the semi for Jedward if they get through to represent Ireland as they are in the Semi the UK aren't voting in.

I guess they won't need to book hotels until Sunday then...

Good news - if it actually happens, and some bad news. They don't actually say yes to the first part, but it looks more likely than last year:

Anyway here is what they say:

Quote:
I believe this might be the year where we will in fact release the show on Blu-Ray. We are currently looking into the figures and expect to decide upon this within the month to come. As always, the decision shall be taken by comparing sales expectations and the wish of us to distribute high quality products on one hand, with the still high costs of producing Blu-Ray on the other hand - i.e. costs for both mastering and manufacturing costs of each unit. But with increasing Blu-Ray sales and decreasing costs, there is a good possibility, that we will in fact do it this year.

With regard to releasing Blu-Ray on the catalogue products, this is not planned.

The last line is bad and that's not what Svante said once who said "Probably in the future it will be possible to buy the compilation discs in blue-ray, including the previous releases."

A reasonable compromise would be for the Final to be available in Blu Ray and the semis in DVD format. The production costs would be significantly lowered.

Yep - though that could lead to confusion, and I think you either do it, or you don't.

I'd be less inclined to buy the Blu-ray just for the final (particularly as we don't get the Semifinals in HD in the UK historically), and you could get all three events onto two Blu-rays at around 20Mbs. (I think squeezing all three onto one BD50 would be pushing it though at 1080i)

I hope they DO release this year's show on Blu-ray. I think they were surprised how many complaints they got after last year's appalling DVD release (with the incredibly poor sound and picture quality and their production house's less-than-honest explanation of the 25p processing - which was undoubtedly caused by incompetence during mastering rather than a conscious decision...)

The cost of Blu-ray mastering IS falling, and I believe production is now cheaper as well. Let's hope the numbers make sense.

As for Svante's comments - I suspect he means that eventually they could be released - not that they definitely will be. I suspect if they do it this year, it will be a trial, and whether they do it again will depend entirely on sales.

Think there's a better chance of HD Semis this year now there's two channels.
