The IBM issue ...

IBM are suppliers to the tournament and thus providing the service to the organisers, which the BBC are contracted with. There's no direct relationship between the Broadcaster and IBM.

Telenor are suppliers/sponsors to the ESC which is organised by the EBU which the BBC are a member of, so the relationship is one of subsidising a BBC organised event (remember Robinsons at the SPOTY a few years ago) therefore it's not permissable and counts as advertising or product placing.

Err - Telenor DO operate in the UK. They're a major satellite operator via their TelenorSBC subsidiary - and a number of UK-based channels, including those run by BBC Worldwide and Discovery Networks, use their space segments...

I didn't know that, but still, how many people watching are actually in a position to be able to use their services?

Don't think that is an issue particularly. They've paid for their logo to appear on-screen.

If the show had commercial breaks in it which contained adverts for Norwegian-only products - would that be acceptable?

Playing devils advocate I'd say are they actually adverts if they're for things you can't actually buy? Smile

Yep - if an advertiser has paid for the airtime they are an advert. Airtime has been surrendered editorially to a third party in return for money. The purpose of the airtime is immaterial. Devils advocating back!

AIUI the logo normally mixes up and down over an area of solid colour, so the minute the BBC gallery see the scoreboard, they superimpose a grab of the blank colour to mask the area where the logo will appear, so that it is hidden as the logo mixes up. As soon as they see the logo disappear from the host feed they remove the block masking the logo area, before the feed cuts away from the board, to avoid seeing the block of mask over the camera shot (usually - they've been caught out in previous years ISTR). I don't think there has ever been a separate logo-free feed.

So the logo fades up and down seperately from the scoreboard graphic leading and lagging by a few seconds?

I believe so.

Yes - the BBC tried to argue that the Robinsons funding went to fund the event rather than the programme - but that didn't really hold water, because that argument only works if the event is organised independently of the TV coverage, and would happen independently.

They do that in Melodifestivalen for the final. I quite like it as you get to see a different side of the artist(s) - nervous, having fun etc. I think that keeping the post card simple allows for this - as you're staying in the arena with this style of post-card, rather than going to and from VT (which is how MF do it - though they use interviews with the artist as their "postcard" and carry on overlaying the audio over the backstage cutaway)

I think the semi-VRness of the card graphics, with a virtual screen locked to the crane worked really nicely though - and very cost-effective.

Compared to the rest of the television presentation, it's very jarring and 'odd' though, Noggin.
It's as though the 'live on stage' cut is being done for the BBC's benefit (as though a commercial logo is being plastered over the postcard VT), and this is a thrown together solution to hide it. The live picture cut, doesn't fade in or out, or fly on to the screen, it's just a simple picture cut.

Strange.

Thanks to me getting home late, I've just started watching ESC 2010 semi-final 2, in chasing playback mode on my hard disk recorder. Thus I'm running about 45 minutes late.

Paddy suggested this was the first time at the Eurovision that we'd had such backstage shots.

Um...Stockholm 2000, anyone?

Paris did it in 1978 (when I was knee high to a grasshopper!)

I remember them showing the artists make their way to the stage from the green room

That's how it is on the proper stream on the Eurovsion website.

Just got to the end of the Netherlands song. I stopped the disk and realised I had about a minute's voting time left, so being as I liked Sha-La-Lie so much, I've just voted for Netherlands.
