Lame AFD attempt on Janice Long's R2 programme this morning, just after midnight, 'Keith Chegwin to represent Norway in Oslo', complete with telephone interview and a snatch of his 'song'.

Yep - particularly for those of us who are MGP fans and saw Didrik selected...

Eurovision in 3D or just a late April Fools?

Can't help but notice they say you need the "well known red-green" (I thought they were red-blue?!) glasses but the picture they've linked to at the bottom is one of those clear sets of glasses you get in the cinema. Sad

It wasn't a very nice joke of NRK/the EBU. When Blu-ray 3D is coming out (but with zero 3D titles on sale) and 3D TVs are coming out, etc. and they say they are going to record this programme for the first time in 3D and then later say no we're not it was just a joke Rolling Eyes It's like them saying "we're going to record it in high definition" then later saying "no we're not we were just joking". It's like false advertising. This is the sort of programme they should be thinking about recording in 3D. For the biggest broadcasting union to say they are going to record one of the biggest TV programmes in 3D and then later on say "no we're not it was just a big joke" isn't very good. Mad But I wasn't fooled though Smile

And you can get anaglyph 3D glasses in red and green, as well as ones in red and blue, and red and cyan, and other colours. Though red+blue are probably the most common so the "red+green" would have been part of the joke. And if they released it on Blu-ray in 3D it wouldn't need to be anaglyph anyway it would be the better stereoscopic 3D system that the new Blu-ray 3D uses.

Though I suppose it would be too expensive to record it in 3D right now (twice the cameras or lenses). More data (if done properly). Probably new mixers too maybe?

To do 3D properly, you can use existing vision mixers, EVS servers and VTRs, as well as conventional and current matrices. You just lose half of your facilities, or need twice as many of them.

You slave EVS/VTRs into left/right pairs, and you either lose half your keyers or half your ME banks as they become slaved together to do a left/right slaved cut.

To do a simple 6 camera 3D show, you'd need a truck more suited to a more complex 12 camera 2D show, with more VT/EVS, more camera sources on the matrix, more destinations on the matrix, and a vision mixer with far more facilities than is needed.

You need to have software on the mixer that allows slaved cutting (most have this anyway for clean-feed or automatic alternate cut generation) and you also need specific kit for depth measurement and modification, and space for stereographers to sit to control and monitor this.

3G infrastructure (which is designed for 1080/50p video) may help with this - as I suspect most of it will now be designed to route and process 2x1080/50i video over 3G as well for the eye feeds.

I have to say that I realised the NRK thing was an April Fool from the top line - but I have seen the current state-of-the-art in 3D production (like the 3D Steadicam) - and there is no way a show as high profile as Eurovision would use this immature tech for a live mainstream show. I would struggle to imagine them doing it in parallel as a trial either - as the style of production doesn't allow it in the same way as a camera 1 sport like football or rugby does. (Where you can shoot from the other side of the pitch and keep out of each others way.)

Does anybody know if there's a production team diary/blog this year like previous years?

Here's 2009's: http://www.m-m-pr.com/index.php/eurovision-diary/

Doubt it - the AV production appears to be Procon, who last did Eurovision in Athens, and didn't bother with a blog then.

There are some photos on the internet of this years stage (it's already up and mostly lit), it looks, ummm, like a Eurovision stage... Exactly like one to be exact. Almost like they've taken the last couple of years' sets, and moved the bits round a bit and got out a jigsaw to trim the edges a bit.

Can you give us a link to these pictures? I think I've only seen a tiny CGI version on one of the fan sites.

My apologies... it seems they were from 2008...

Maybe that's why the set looked so similar Embarassed

(I shall blame the website... Fully branded in Oslo 2010, small text saying photos added in 2008)

Apparently this is the stage - looks quite dull Confused so I hope the finished product is a bit more striking.

Hmm. Certainly doesn't have the wow factor that the artists impressions of the Moscow set had! Dare I say it looks decidely old-skool with it's Las-Vegas style thrust...?!
