Bill Bailey for Eurovision 2009

You need a haircut.

Yes I know! I've been meaning to, but problems with my laptop and having a horrible cold have pushed it back a bit.

You cut your hair using a laptop?

I was going to make a joke about Apple's Final Cut software, but I shall refrain.

No, I planned to get my hair cut on Friday, but my laptop had a severe problem, and so I spent all day trying to sort it out.

No doubt though we'll probably still end up with a failed auditionee from the X Factor or Fame Academy making a reappearance.

I can R Wayne making an appearance on that basis, his ventriloquist routine would go down a storm.

I still say John Shuttleworth was unforgiveably snubbed-- how could anyone overlook Pigeons In Flight . I ask you Wink

The thing is though, Eurovision.tv lists the countries as follows:
Yugoslavia first entry 1961, last entry 1992 (NOT 1991).
Serbia & Montenegro first entry 2004 (NOT 1992), last entry 2006 (withdrawn that year).
Serbia first entry 2007

If you scroll to the very bottom of the page, you'll see the EBU/UER logo and copyright notice "Copyright EBU 2004-2008 All rights reserved.". Therefore Eurovision.tv is the official Eurovision web site of the European Broadcasting Union, and must be the official source for details of past Eurovision Song Contests. Surely as far as the EBU are concerned, the 1992 Yugoslavia entry was Yugoslavia's last ever entry, even if the geographical area represented was smaller than 1961-1991, whereas Serbia & Montenegro's first ever entry was 2004.

Serbia first entered as an independent country in 2007, and won that very same year, making them the first ever country to win with its very first song entered. I say that because in the very first contest, Switzerland won with its second song of the night, not its first.

If the Eurovision.tv "History by country" had been politically correct, as you put it, what should the year ranges have been for:

1) SFR Yugoslavia
2) FR Yugoslavia
3) Serbia & Montenegro
4) Serbia

Yes I know its the official site, but it doesn't mean to say its totally politically correct, however its not vital for the readers to know.

Politically correct, it would be:
1) SFR Yugoslavia 1961-1991
2) FR Yugoslavia (aka Serbia & Montenegro) 1992, 2004-2006
4) Serbia (2007-)

However since the average joe watching Eurovision won't be bothered by that fact, the official Eurovision site would not go into such intracate information.

Most people would not know the difference between SFR Yugoslavia and FR Yugoslavia, so its not totally important to the Eurovision site I shouldn't imagine.

Also worthy of note is that the flag used on the Eurovision.tv page for Yugoslavia was only used up until 1991. In the 1992 contest, FR Yugoslavia competed using the Tricolour devoid of the red star of Socialism.

Well I suppose if the EBU had wanted to have been really pedantic and pollitically correct about it, then it ought to have been:

1) Yugoslavia 1961-1991 (representing SFR Yugoslavia), won once in 1989
2) FR Yugoslavia 1992 (only ever had one entry, never won) - and entered it under the name FR Yugoslavia to disitinguish it from the 1961-91 entries called "Yugoslavia"
3) Serbia & Montenegro 2004-2006 (3 entries, never won)
4) Serbia (2007-) (won with their debut entry 2007)

Bad news: the UK weren't in the JESC for the 3rd year running, so it wasn't on any UK channel (BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4, etc). Nor were Spain in, so I doubt it was on TVEi.

However it was available as a webcast, just like the last two years. Unfortunately my antiquated Packard-Bell PB 1050 PC (Windows 98SE, 128 MB RAM, 1GHz Athlon) wasn't up to running Octoshape, so in 2006 and 2007, I couldn't see the webcast over the internet.

Good news: last Christmas I replaced that said PC with something much higher spec, capable of running Octoshape. So I was able to watch the JESC online last night. However I had the video window set to full screen mode. In order to minimise any problems watching it, I decided not to have unnecessary other web pages open, e.g. TV Forum. Having TV Forum open to give a running commentary on the JESC would have probably interfered with receiving the webcast.

What a pity Channel 4 Television didn't decide to enter the UK (in the aftermath of ITV pulling out). Then it would have been on Channel 4 (or More 4 / E4), and I could have seen it on TV, and simultaneously commented on it.

Regarding the winner Georgia "Bzz", well I thought that was the worst "song" of the night, yet it won. Look at the official results online to see how many 12s it got. Did those other countries really think it was the best song of the night, or was it a sign of sympathy after the troubles in South Ossetia back in the summer? I thought Georgia's song in the "real" Eurovision Song Contest "Peace Will Come" was so much better.

Sorry to drag this thread up yet again this year but it's official..

Norton is new Wogan on Eurovision

So in other words... Strictly Eurovision Fever Grand Final.

Bye bye Terry.

Graham Norton to replace Terry Wogan on next year's Eurovision.

As much as I'll miss Terry, I think this is actually quite a good choice.

Graham flipping Norton.

I like Graham Norton a lot - I think he's excellent but I don't think he'll do the contest justice. He'll just squeal when the camp dancers and men with bleach blond hair come on. Sir Terry's "disgust" was all part of the contest.

Why was Paddy O'Connell who has been an absolutely fantastic commentator on the semi finals on BBC3 overlooked? Surely they didn't want a big name just because the main event is on BBC1?

Or he'll do his annoying "ahat ahat ahat" laugh that he does.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see if Graham can commentate with a dry wit and not go wild at the sight of lycra and dyed 80s bubble perms.

(talk about pipped to the post Inspector Sands..especially at this time of night! Laughing )

It's a shame that Sir Terry has officially stepped down but replacing him with Graham Norton is a terrible decision in my opinion. Having Graham Norton as a commentator is absoloutely terrible, in my opinion Sir Terry was the greatest commentator in Europe and I'd like to thank him for his excellent commentating on the radio from 1971-1972 and on BBC1 from 1973-2008

Thank You Sir Terry Wogan.
