I wonder if the BBC are stretching themselves a bit too much lately - especially holding such an event the day after the Comic Releif telethon?

Bear in mind that it was made at a non-BBC studio, so that shouldn't really be a factor.

I think that's the problem, all of the BBC's resources went into Comic Relief last night, leaving nothing for Eurovision: MYMU. If they had given it an extra week or two, they would have been able to broadcast Eurovision from TC1, and spend the extra time perfecting the show.

Apparently the BBC were pushing it with the EBU by waiting this late to decide their entry.

They should have done it earlier then!

Really, it's not like any of these live events weren't fixed in the diary months ahead!

Perhaps next year they'd be better off letting the viewers of CBeebies make the decision!

Hmm I don't know though - we've all been concentrating too much on making sure Tara Palmer-Sillyface wins Fame Academy. Rolling Eyes

Sky News is already showing the the MYMU balls-up.

To think the BBC has produced 8 Song Contests over the years Rolling Eyes What an utter disaster from start to finish. The whole programme was awful! Terry should retire from live television, he was totally lost tonight.

What is even more worrying this year is that this was the first year that there was no open competition for song writers to enter. The BBC picked those 6 songs themselves Rolling Eyes Seems like they were pinning their hopes on Morrissey too much and didn't both looking at the other songs.

A total shambles!

Years ago - mid nineties I think when they changed it (back) to having different acts, rather than just one singer and eight songs. For a few years it was known as The Great British Song Contest - which to be honest is what I think they should do - have about 16 acts in a two-hour show and let the public have a real choice.

Well judging by UK performances in recent years, it seems the BBC knew best with the original idea...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but last time we won, back in 1997, wasn't it already rebranded as the GBSC? I seem to remember it being renamed as such back in 1996, the year after Love City Groove performed for us, in an attempt to breathe life into it after a fairly low result from them, and indeed Frances Ruffelle in '94.

(Yes, I know Katrina and the Waves' song was picked within the National Lottery Live show of the day, but ISTR them using a Great British Song Contest sting at least once...)

I may be wrong but I think it was rebranded 'The Great British Song Contest' when Jonathon King took over, in 1995.

He took over in 1995, but it was still called 'A Song for Europe' that year; the name change was the following year, before it changed back again in 2000.

Thank you, as I said I thought I was wrong.

They changed it from A Song For Europe to The Great British Song Contest in '96, then back to A Song For Europe in 2000, and it's been Making Your Mind Up since 2004. Interestingly Terry Wogan didn't host it in 1997 or from 1999 to 2002...amazing the things you can find out with that TV & Radio Bits thingamajig.

I feel sorry for poor Cyndi, believing that she'd won for those brief few seconds...we probably have made the wrong choice, but it is an annoyingly catchy song, and you never know, maybe it'll surprise everyone and get loads of points! Erm, maybe.

This was a ghastly production, Terry was way out of his depth and didn't have a clue what was going on.

Awful songs, awful acts, awful show.
