If you say "Scooch" and "Cyndi" they are so damn close that you can understand in the hubbub of the show how the misunderstanding could have occurred. It's clear that they should have done the result feed to the presenters by card rather than talkback to earpiece.

Anyway, another thing that got me was the total randomness of having John Barrowman and Mel Giedroyc as critics.

Barrowman isn't that random - he's a well known West End musical theatre performer with a well regarded voice, and was well qualified to critique the performances (as he did on How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?) He could, in another world, have represented us in Eurovision in a similar vein to Michael Ball.

Ah I remember now. Yes, Didn't he leave Live and Kicking to do the West End?

I think Paddy O'Connell was needed last night.

Yes - because Phil had "prop" cards on Dancing on Ice I believe - and someone picked up on the fact he was holding them before the lines closed! (They didn't have the results on them) Talkback would be a normal way of doing it - though not always directly to a presenter. There is often enough time for the floor manager to write the result on a cue card and hand it to the presenter just before they go into the final sequence - say if the lines close during an "interval" act as is often the case on Strictly.

Terry Wogan famously didn't ever use an earpiece doing Wogan - or an autocue - instead he had large "idiot boards" held by a floor manager or floor assistant. These were A2 or A1 size white cards with script thoughts (though not every word) and question prompts written in large magic marker, that were held in his eyeline.

It isn't THAT unusual to have presenters on some shows not wearing an earpiece (Dale Winton seldom wears one) - and instead working with a floor manager.

This may explain why Terry was less comfortable WITH an earpiece for this show?

Fearne will be used to it from her many hours doing live or as-live kids shows - as modern presenters get used to earpieces very quickly.

I did feel very sorry for Cyndi.

Re the BBC's explanation

"A BBC statement later apologised for the gaffe but confirmed Scooch had won. "This is live TV and unfortunately sometimes these things do happen," it added"

Err, no they don't. There are announcements like this made on reality shows and talent shows 100s of times a year thesedays, and never has there been such a cockup

But even though it didn't happen before, it had the capacity to happen.

Scooch has thought Cyndi had won though, and if they knew the results, Scooch would be jumping for joy. Remember, Scooch were next to Terry, and with the roudy audience and Terry's mic being the louder one on the sound system, they probably only heard Cyndi, where as Cyndi was next to Fearn, so she would have clearly heard Fearn say Scooch, and therefore probably wasn't sure who had won with both presenters saying two different things.

I think the fact that the director cut to a shot of Scooch and Fearne Cotton said 'Scooch', makes a mockery of Mark Thompson's "Whoever's fault it was, I'm sure it wasn't Terry Wogan's." Who else could have possibly been at fault?

It is very easy to be an armchair expert... Was Terry's talkback working properly? Was the talkback at Maidstone Studios any good? Was "Maidstone Cabs" breaking through on it? Was Terry given the right information? Were lots of people speaking at once in the gallery?

If you can't answer any of these questions with an informed answer then I'd suggest you don't really have any reason to make that statement.

I wasn't there. I don't know what happened. I've made some informed suggestions earlier in this thread - but I certainly can't claim to know what happened... Can you?

(And how do you know "The Director cut" - it could have been the vision mixer taking a shot from a group of cameras that were on fixed shots, or a shot called by the PA according to a camera script. Again - were you there?)

BTW - if anyone wants an idea just how big Melodifestivalen is in Sweden - just look at their top 10 this week :

http://allcharts.org/music/sweden/singles.htm

9 of the top 10 singles are from Melodifestivalen. The odd-one-out is Linda Bengtzing and Markoolio's mickey take of Melodifestivalen, which is at number 8 (and is hilarious if you watch the video on Youtube)

There are a further 6 MF songs in the 11-20 group - so 15 of the top 20 are MF songs... Can you imagine the UK charts where 15 of the top 20 songs were entries in Making Your Mind Up????

OMG!!!! What a muck up!!!! How funny to watch - but to be kind of fair, the Audience were chanting 'Sindi... Sindi.... Sindi....' so maybe Terry got distracted from that !!!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Cool !!!
