I'm not so sure about going down that route - but I think making it a bigger event is a way forward so it's an annual mini-Eurovision Song Contest to determine the UK act - a live two-hour Saturday night show with around 16 acts and viewers judging on the songs, not the personalities - and Wogan confined to the commentary booth.
Oh dear, all that CIN money must finally have gone to Terry's head! Though in fairness, the tension was clearly bubbling over so he may have misheard in the confusion.
But it says it all that at least two members of Scooch are (or have been?) quiz TV presenters.
I want a go at posting clips. I see your correct aspect ratio and raise you 3 other 'interesting' parts of the show (the first reveal taking ages, Hawkins walking off, Terry Wogan's brain melting and of course the winner annoucement)
Anyway, another thing that got me was the total randomness of having John Barrowman and Mel Giedroyc as critics.
Barrowman isn't that random - he's a well known West End musical theatre performer with a well regarded voice, and was well qualified to critique the performances (as he did on How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?) He could, in another world, have represented us in Eurovision in a similar vein to Michael Ball.
Mel was a bit more random, but you need a second voice, someone nice, and given that she'd just got out of Celeb Fame Acadamy it kind of slightly linked. She did a good job remembering the Euro-facts she'd been primed with (I assume). She was a bit like Julia Morris, the Aussie comedian who worked with Paddy O'Connell on the Eurovision after show on BBC Three in Kyiv.
Although I did enjoy Making Your Mind Up it did look a little under rehearsed. Wogan looked bewildered throughout, whilst John and Mel contradicting what they said after each act.
Lord knows what that cock-up at the end was about, I really did feel sorry for Cyndi. I disagree with James Hall when he said that she was dull. She was one of the most powerful UK hopefuls we've had for many years. I did vote of Scooch in the first vote but I was so torn in the second I never voted, both deserved to be the final. Liz's song was just dreary, Brian clearly could sing his, Big Brovaz produced a song which sounds just like any other second rate commercial R&B song and don't get me started on the pointless screaming of Justin Hawkins.
I think on hindsight Cyndi would have got my second vote but I am quite happy that Scooch won. The song went down a storm last night in the club I DJ at, and I know there was a huge buzz about the song on various Eurovision websites and on Youtube before the show.
Anyway, another thing that got me was the total randomness of having John Barrowman and Mel Giedroyc as critics.
Re the BBC's explanation
"A BBC statement later apologised for the gaffe but confirmed Scooch had won. "This is live TV and unfortunately sometimes these things do happen," it added"
Err, no they don't. There are announcements like this made on reality shows and talent shows 100s of times a year thesedays, and never has there been such a cockup
