British Eurosport has launched on Top Up TV today as a replacement for the freshly-liberated E4.

The station, available on channel 49, will broadcast between 2pm and 11pm daily

"We have asked our customers which channel they would most like to see in the package, and British Eurosport has consistently come top of the list, so we are excited that we will be able to offer the channel to our customers," said David Chance, chairman of Top Up TV. "We think that offering a dedicated sports channel in our package will offer an exciting option to Freeview customers."

Laurent-Eric Le Lay, Eurosport's General Manager, added: "We are pleased to add British Eurosport to this growing pay-tv platform, and to be able to offer its subscribers our extensive range of live sports content that they have not previously had access to.

"This Top Up TV deal will extend the audience to our channel, as well as ensuring that we are present on all the pay tv platforms in the UK. We see it as a further opportunity to cement our position in the UK as the key sports channel provider for 'basic' pay tv packages."

As reported last week, Eurosport was one of the contenders on the shortlist, which included Paramount Comedy as a frontrunner.

Probably the same focus group that approved of the BBC weather maps and told ITV Celebrity Wrestling was a great idea.

Eurosport is a great addition to Top Up TV - it offers something TUTV doesn't have and could attract new subscribers - but once again the restricted hours are a problem, especially for live sport before 2pm and after 11pm.

Surely this subject warrants it's own thread?

I think it's a great shame that they have replaced a general entertainment channel with a minority sports channel. As said before, it will miss out on live sport outside of the topuptv hours, and will probably cut into and out of live coverage at some point - leaving viewers wondering what's going on.

On the flipside, the dtt platform did need a sports channel of some description.

I agree - finally LIVE sport on DTT rather than the yawnworthiness of Sky Sports News. Football, tennis, motor racing, beach volleyball... Cool

BTW was just providing a jumping point from this thread to the press release in the other thread

Just who the hell forms a "focus group"? There the biggest waste of time and effort known to man. To be blunt there f-ing useless, just look at recent government policy, Marching homeless people to cash points, Jesus!
Have people lost the ability to think for themselves? and I've yet to meet a single person ever involved in these things...
Have any of you heard the 2 channel things doing the rounds? Its said that Eurosport is not the only channel but Paramount will also join. Any truth to it or yet more idle tosh?

Shame its not free-to-air though. If you don't have Top Up TV there are no live sport channels on Freeview which is a shame for us sports fans.

You been watching BBC Four's 'The Thick of It"? Had a pretty funny episode involving a focus group on it last week, and it proved your point rather well.
In the social science research courses I've taken at Uni all of our lecturers have told us to think really critically about any conclusions made using focus groups. As an aside, they are now extremely popular in market research but I'm yet to be convinced. People are too likely to lie, or not be representative in a focus group or not want to say what they really think in front of other people. I'm not suggesting this is the case with Top Up TV, but this research method does seem to be a bit of a craze at the moment, with the results perhaps being pretty questionable.

True. But for the same reasons there are no movie channels on freeview. If that were to happen no one would pay for any subscription channels anymore!
