Where's the North's rocket?

From the Pyeongchang 2018 thread – Discovery Eurosport is sub-licensing rights around Europe, but there's no consistency in the rights that they choose to sell or keep:

Germany:

Interesting that the ARD/ZDF deal in Germany is quite different to the UK deal (the BBC had a stronger hand in some ways as they had exclusive 2018 and 2020 rights and bartered them with Discovery who had exclusive 2022 and 2024 rights)

So Eurosport 1 is FTA in Germany for the duration, and can show anything at any time. ARD/ZDF can't broadcast in prime time, and can only show German matches and finals in some events that are otherwise Eurosport-exclusive [Snowboard, Short Track, Figure Skating and Ice Hockey]. That's a significant difference to the BBC. However ARD/ZDF appear to have more online rights as they can run 3 digital streams - whereas the BBC can only run one?

Germany's Eurosport 1 is FTA anyway so the deal will have to take that into account.

Reportedly Eurosport had been demanding the public channels pay €150 million for each of the 2018 and 2020 games, to sub-licence rights to ARD and ZDF. The negotiations broke down in November 2016. As it is, ARD/ZDF are paying a total of €221.5 million to sublicence the four Games 2018–2024.

Finland:

YLE [Finnish PSB] appear to have done a pretty good deal with Eurosport/Discovery for 2018 - they can show 5 simultaneous streams, with 2 of them on broadcast outlets, though Discovery have Ice Hockey (a big event) exclusively I think.

In France the deals aren't done yet

France Télévisions has 2018 and 2020 - they haven't given any rights away.

Discovery Eurosport took the French rights for 2022 and 2024. Currently it's the sole rights holder, but both Games must be free-to-air in France, and Paris is hosting 2024, so obviously something will be on-sold.

In this Le Parisien article there's speculation that Eurosport will charge a premium for Paris 2024 rights, and retain exclusives for itself, while separately selling off the opening ceremony, team sports and 'queen' events. But it's unclear if that comes from an inside source, or just the journo.

Either way it doesn't look like the viewers are the winners in any of this. Events will just be more fragmented and get lower audiences. But if it doesn't affect the IOC's bottom line, then that's the future.

Another crossover post - a lot of 2018 studio and graphics screencaps from TheGeek:

Speaking of Eurosport, here's a bit of their pres from around Europe (some of which has been airing on Discovery's other networks)

The Eurosport Sweden studio in Korea, used for Kanal 5 output (the middle picture above), is incredibly neat.

It has AR foreground graphics and virtual screens which are keyed over Olympic ring physical set elements (so disappear when not in-use rather than remaining with a holding graphic in them as a physical screen would) However the year also using the jib tracking data for generating content for the large LED 'wraparound' screen behind the hosts and presenters. (This AR is very similar to the treatment that BBC Sport used in Rio.)

This LED screen has content that is tracked to the jib so it gives huge depth and parallax - as the jib cranes up and tilts down, or tracks the LED content changes perfectly locked to it (I think they are taking a 4K beauty shot a lot of the time). They then have overlaid 'frosted window' effects that are also in the LED screen overlaid over the tracking background. The result is incredibly effective. (This is a similar technique to that used on the projector graphics that the BBC used on the Scottish Referendum results.)
