A brief (recent) history to kick things off. The European Olympic Commitees finally got around to launching a continental version of the Olympics, the European Games, which debuted in 2015, but the major European sporting federations weren't really on board and as such if their events did form part of the European Games it was a second tier event with a second tier of competitors. However after the first games many federations came together to launch their own version, the European Sports Championships, with 7 sports. Glasgow would host the inaugural edition, but athletics remains in Berlin, already awards the European Championships.
TV wise crucially the sporting federations stuck with the EBU and a major driver behind the event is increasing exposure for the event, and it's clear already that is the case. Although athletics has always had it's European Championships well covered by the BBC for the other sports involved it has generally been red button and highlights. However this year there is approximately 12 hours a day of live coverage of events on BBC1/2. Once again the BBC only talk about one extra stream, and with just 7 sports there are rarely more than 2 or 3 simultaneous events but even so when that does occur I would hope online they don't restrict it to just the one extra event because that's what the Olympic deal is.
There is no opening ceremony and although there are some qualifiers on Thursday officially the ESC (nope, that abbreviation is already taken!) begins on Friday and runs for 10 days. BBC wise it looks like Hazel is hosting in the mornings and Clare taking over in the afternoon through to the evening, with Gabby also hosting the athletics from Glasgow.
