Err - the major advantage has been that the studio in Vienna is HD. The BBC Sport studio in London is SD only. Doing the BBC HD coverage in there wasn't an option really.
Personally I think that the Vienna studio looks clean, fresh and classy, and definitely gives a feeling that the team are out there. In comparison, the BBC Sport studio in London, whilst a very nicely executed and flexible studio, feels like a studio that could be anywhere.
There is always the argument that presentation can be done from London and not on-site. However I usually prefer on-site presentation. I think the Turin Winter Olympics coverage (which had a presentation studio in Turin, though most of the presentation co-ordination was done via a BBC Sport gallery in London - which was possible because it was SD not HD), looked much better than a few years earlier when the presentation had been from a virtual studio in London.
It's a shame though ITV didn't put much effort in with their London studio - would have been an ideal time to unveil a new studio - never really been a fan of their football studio, it just doesn't look quite right.
At the moment ITV are not spending money unless they absolutely have to... They are presenting from the UK, in a reasonably low cost way, with just the matches in HD (with the studio and analysis upconverted SD) and it does look much cheaper. I think they've decided that with no home countries in Euro 2008, the audience figures are unlikely to be stellar, so they have to do the coverage in a cost-effective manner to still make a profit.

Well for once BBC3 got the better studio then. The BBC Sport studio works pretty well, and I don't think there's been much advantage in having the team out in a glass box in Austria when they're just watching matches on TV anyway.
